(en) A surrealistic documentary portrait of the region of Las Hurdes, a remote region of Spain where civilisation has barely developed, showing how the local peasants try to survive without even the most basic utilities and skills.

The region of Las Hurdes, not far from Salamanca, is largely cut off from the rest of the world. To reach Las Hurdes, it is necessary to travel through the town of La Alberca, which itself has some unusual sights and customs. The Hurdanos themselves live in several dozen villages in the nearby mountains, near a valley that contains the ruins of a convent. The lifestyle of the Hurdanos is so primitive that, until fairly recently, even bread was unknown to them.

(sk) Región Las Hurdes neďaleko od španielskej Salamancy je takmer úplne odrezaný od vonkajšieho sveta. "Hurdania" žijú v niekoľkých dedinách okolo mesta La Alberca na úpätí hôr. Ich životný štýl je primitívny, všetci sú si vlastne príbuzní, žijú v chudobe, chorobe a biede, dokonca mnohí ani chlieb nepoznajú...

Bunuelův dokument ze španělské vesnice před občanskou válkou Země bez chleba. Film natočil ve spolupráci s lidmi z CNT a je jedním z nejlepších sociálně kritických snímků třicátých let. Bunuel byl členem surrealistické internacionály a politicky se řadil k jejímu proanarchistickému křídlu. Sociální kritika (spolu s nadměrnou dávkou černého humoru) je v nějaké míře přítomná ve všech jeho filmech - nejlepší jsou asi Nenápadný půvab buržoazie, Mléčná dráha a Nazarin.
