Just a few ideas in case you want to add some other things to your New Year's Eve table. I know its cold, but pull out your grill pan and grill up some eggplant slices, all your grilling can be done the night before. There's still time!
Layer each slice with some roasted red pepper, a mixture of feta and herbed cream cheese, you can even use goat cheese if you like, top each slice with spinach or arugula, and then just roll them up and stick a skewer in each one.
A little drizzle of olive oil over the top, and you have a delicious combination!
Keep your grill pan out and make some Spiedini Di Mozzarella. Take 3 slices of a good quality country loaf or sourdough bread, brush each slice with olive oil, stack them on top of each other and place a slice of fresh mozzarella between each layer. Now cut the stack into quarters, and into each quarter stick one rosemary sprig. Grill until the bread is toasted and the cheese melts. Serve with your favorite pesto for dipping.
You can't go wrong with Portobella Pizzas either! After cleaning and scraping out the gills of each mushroom, place them for 5 minutes on each side under your broiler until they become tender. Then fill them with whatever you like, I used Italian sausage that was already browned, and tomatoes. Top them with some fresh mozzarella and place back under the broiler a couple of minutes until the cheese turns golden brown. Vegetarian options are just as delicious, you can even quarter them and also serve with skewers.

(en) Jock Palfreeman is a 23-year-old Australian currently in prison in Sofia, Bulgaria. He has been charged with premeditated murder and attempted murder with antisocial intent, following a conflict with a group of 16 men.
In December 2007, Jock witnessed the group attacking two men of Roma ethnicity (“gypsies”) in Sofia. Jock went to the aid of the Roma men, putting himself in the middle of the attack. The Roma men were able to escape, but the gang continued their vicious attack on Jock. Following the fight, one member of the gang was killed (Andrey Monov) and another injured (Antoan Zahariev). Jock maintains that he tried to escape the violent gang, and was forced to act in self-defense.
Jock was refused bail, and has spent almost two years in Sofia Central Prison. On Wednesday, 2nd December 2009, Jock gave his final plea to the court, and was subsequently found to be guilty of both charges. He was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment with civil fines of 450,000 Bulgarian Leva (about 375,000 AUD).
At freejock.net, we maintain that Jock acted in self-defense, and strongly believe he should be returned to his family and friends in Australia. The purpose of this website is to be an accurate information resource for those interested in his case, and to provide a means for his supporters to unite and support this young man through his ordeal.

Před dvěmi lety se byl Jock Palfreeman, tehdy jednadvacetiletý Australan žijící několik měsíců na bulharském venkově, pobavit s přáteli v Sofii. Když se v jednu v noci vraceli z baru, narazili na skupinu asi dvaceti fotbalových chuligánů Levski FC, kteří před jejich očima brutálně napadli dva Romy. Jock Palfreeman se jich slovně i fyzicky zastal a ocitl se tak přímo v centru konfliktu.
Napadeným se podařilo utéct, agresivita rasistů (není bez zajímavosti, že podle bulharských antifašistů a antifašistek patří chuligáni Levski FC z drtivé většiny k neonacistům nebo jejich silným stoupencům) se ale obrátila proti Jockovi. Ten na svou obranu vytáhl nůž, rasisté útočili kusy betonu. Jock během rvačky jednoho z útočníku smrtelně zranil, druhého pobodal.
Otec zabitého chuligána Levski FC Andreje Monova je známou, veřejně činnou osobou a zastává významný post na Ministerstvu vnitra. Na pohřbu mu kondolovali významní politici a vysoce postavení policisté; vedle nich se pohřbu zúčastnili stovky neonacistů. Krajní pravice z incidentu udělala „svůj" případ, který obalila nenávistnou propagandou proti cizincům.
Jock byl po incidentu byl zatčen a vzat do vazby, kde strávil dva roky. 2.prosince byl v Sofii odsouzen ke dvaceti letům vězení za úkladnou vraždu a pokus o vraždu s antisociálním motivem. Jeho přátelé a rodiče mluví o zmanipulovaném procesu, připomínají záhadnou ztrátu záznamů z bezpečnostních kamer zabírajících místo incidentu a mizení klíčových svědků.
Je nutno vyjasnit, že Jock nepatřil a nepatří k žádné politické ani radikálně antifašistické skupině či organizace. I jeho bulharští přátelé ale vzpomínají, že vždy zastával striktně antirasistické postoje. Ve své závěrečné řeči před soudem řekl mimo jiné toto:
„Nejde jen o pohrdání spravedlností a mým právem na spravedlivý a nestranný proces, ale také o signál fotbalovým chuligánům, že mají zelenou k dalším útokům na bezúhonné členy a členky společnosti, zvláště pak na rasové menšiny, které jsou pro tyto skupiny hlavním cílem jak v Bulharsku, tak v EU a na celém světě."

During a stormy night, a billboard falls over the wall and three smalltime thieves cross the border through the breach to rob. They break into a house and kill an old lady; the residents organize militias to chase the delinquents. Two of them and one security guard are murdered by the vigilantes, but the sixteen year old Miguel hides in the basement of the teenager Alejandro. When Alejandro finds Miguel, he feeds and helps the boy, but it is impossible to escape from the Zone.
(cz) Ostře hlídaná zóna, ze které není úniku. V Mexico City žijí lidé odděleně podle sociálních skupin. Mezi čtvrtěmi pro bohaté a chudé jsou zdi s kamerovými systémy pomocí kterých se bohatí snaží bránit nájezdům zlodějů ze slumů. Jedné bouřlivé noci strhne vítr billboard, který jednu takovou zeď prorazí. Dírou se protáhnou tři lupiči, kteří při vloupání do domu nešťastnou náhodou zabijí starou ženu. Obyvatelé čtvrti na ně okamžitě začnou pořádat hon. Dva lupiči jsou zastřeleni, ale šestnáctiletému Miguelovi se podaří schovat ve sklepě. Tam jej najde Alejandro a poskytne mu jídlo a další pomoc. Miguel by se rád vrátil do své čtvrti, ale dostat se ven z ostře hlídané zóny není jednoduché.

Can one person really make a difference? In December 1997, Julia Hill climbed a thousand-year-old redwood tree vowing not to come down until it was saved from being clear-cut. She lived 180 feet off the ground for more than two years, galvanizing an already intense dispute over the fate of Northern California's old-growth forests. Wolens' film is a primer on forest issues and direct-action environmentalism, but most of all, it is about the spiritual journey of a determined, articulate woman nicknamed Butterfly who saved an ancient tree she called Luna.

Môže jedna osoba skutočne dosiahnuť nejakú zmenu? V decembri 1997, Julia Hill vyliezla na tisíc ročnú sekvoju so sľubom, že nezíde dole, kým nebude tento strom uchránený pred vyťažením. Žila 55 metrov nad zemou viac ako dva roky, podnecujúc už aj tak intenzívny spor o osude severo kalifornských prastarých lesov. Film režíséra Wolensa základným učivom k lesným otázkam a priamej akcie environmentalistov, ale zo všetkého najviac, je to o duchovnej ceste odhodlanej, výrečnej žene, prezývanej Butterfly (Motýlik), ktorá zachránila starý strom nazvaný Luna.
