Secret Garden

On the lands north of Castello, vineyards used to be growns during the Middle Ages. The place had been given to the Franciscans in 1253, in order to build a church, San Francesco della Vigna. Two cloisters are to be seen in San Francesco della Vigna, the largest dating back from the 14th century. From one of them, an unseen and locked door prevents the visitor from accessing this - surprisingly vast in Venice - friars' kitchen garden.

(en) A documentary examining the tragedy which occured in West Philadelphia on May 13, 1985, when 11 people died and 61 families lost their homes in a fire which resulted from a police-orchestrated firebombing of the neighborhood. The tragedy occured as a result of a confrontation between the city of Philadelphia and the members of the Black radical organization known as MOVE.

On Mother's Day, 1985, a virtual army of city and state police converged on a quiet block in historic Cobb's Creek, a blossoming neighborhood of parks and children, aluminum siding and basketball stars nestled in the heart of Philadelphia's African American community. By the next day, 61 homes were destroyed and 11 people were dead, all members of the communitarian MOVE organization. In this, the winner of 1987's Global Village Best Documentary Award, Massiah establishes the setting for the tragedy early on, and Toni Cade Bambara's poetic narration draws us deeper into the drama.

Neighbors recall the coming of MOVE members, unusual in their back-to-nature lifestyle, and the incidents -- including trash thrown into their yards amd profanities blasting over loudspeakers -- which caused their relationship with the community to deteriorate almost immediately. Eventually the close-knit community called on city officials to deal with MOVE members, unwittingly opening a Pandora's Box. The bombing referred to in the documentary's title was ordered by the Philadelphia police with the acquiescence of then-mayor, W. Wilson Goode, shortly after a 90-minute gun battle with 500 hundred city police officers ensued.

Of all the television hours devoted to this internationally infamous event, Massiah's documentary is possibly the first to look at the real human loss, not only in the deaths that include a number of MOVE children, but the proud community of families that survived race wars and gang wars, only to be nearly destroyed by its own city.

Individual " Lighter" Chicken Pot Pies

Winter just wouldn't be complete if I didn't make at least one pot pie, lately I tend to shy away from them because normally they're not the most healthy thing to eat, but this version is not only portion controlled but the sauce is made from a rue whisked with chicken broth infused with garlic and fresh thyme, and yes, there's a piece of puff pastry on top but it was cut out with a small cookie cutter, so how bad can that be?

I can't stress enough how absolutely delicious this combination of roasted chicken, roasted butternut squash and fresh chopped spinach is. Spinach and butternut squash is a match made in heaven, I've been making so many meals lately from those two ingredients, in fact my next post will be a lovely risotto minus the chicken, replaced with hearty crimini mushrooms. So good!

This recipe filled three 5" ramekins, and I only used one large chicken breast for all three. I served my pot pies along side a salad of mixed baby greens, it all went perfect together.

Wouldn't this be cute for a cozy little Valentine dinner, besides, you'd have plenty of room left for a decadent dessert!

Here's the ingredients:

1. A previously roasted chicken breast, I seasoned mine with a drizzle of olive oil, thyme, salt and pepper.

2. A previously cut up and roasted butternut squash that was drizzled with olive oil, salt and pepper. You'll have leftovers, but that's a good thing, that's what I made my risotto with!

3. A huge handful of fresh spinach, coarsely chopped.

4. Onion, garlic, fresh thyme.

5. Grated Parmesan cheese.

6. Puff pastry sheet defrosted, and shapes cut out with a cookie cutter.

Here's what you do:

In a saucepan melt 1 tablespoon of butter and saute 2 minced garlic cloves and 1/2 of a small red onion.

Stir in 2 tablespoons of flour, season with salt and pepper and then whisk in a good 2 cups of chicken broth, maybe a teenie more, also add some fresh thyme, and a generous handful of grated cheese.

Note* If you want the sauce to look creamier stir in a tablespoon of milk or half and half, but you really don't need it!

When the sauce thickens, turn off the stove and throw in your chicken, squash and chopped spinach. Scoop ladles full into your buttered ramekins and place your puff pastry cut out on top of filling, ( brush a little milk or cream on top to help get it golden brown).

Bake in a 400F. oven untill brown and bubbly, 15 to 20 minutes.

Ricotta Dumplings in Broth

It's still winter out there, in fact as I write this I'm looking at snowflakes falling. To me, there's nothing like a bowl of hot steamy soup to warm me up, and this one fits the bill. Not only is it quick to make, providing you have all the ingredients, but it's also very healthy and light, there's not one bit of flour in these dumplings!

Cheesy ricotta dumplings flavored with fresh parsley, parmesan cheese and a hint of garlic bathing in a bowl of broth, doesn't that sound good? You can even use a veggie broth if you like, and maybe even add a few fresh spinach leaves right into your bowl for extra color and flavor.

Heres the recipe:

Adapted from a 1998 La Cucina Italiana magazine

1 pound ricotta

3 cloves of minced garlic

Italian parsley minced

1 cup bread crumbs

7 ounces of freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano

2 eggs

12 cups of good chicken broth, homemade or store bought, plus extra for cooking dumplings in.

Combine the first 6 ingredients into a bowl, make sure everything is incorporated. Roll spoonfuls of the mixture into cherry tomato sized balls, set aside. This recipe gives you at least 24 to 30 ricotta balls.

These little dumplings tend to puff up so try not to overcrowd them like I did in the photo above, otherwise they might hit each other and break up a bit. Simmer slowly in some of the extra hot broth until they're cooked through. They rise to the top and double in size when they're done.

The reason I like to cook my dumplings first separately in some of the extra broth, is because in case a dumpling breaks, or tiny pieces of dumpling break off it won't cloud up all your broth, I think it just looks visually better that way.

Then carefully take them out with a slotted spoon, place as many cooked dumplings you want in their individual bowls and ladle some of the existing 12 cups of broth you have preserved, so the 12 cups should be enough to cover the 24-30 dumplings you will make, and you'll need at least an extra 4 cups to pre-cook your dumplings in.

The loss of natural habitats is the single main cause for the global loss of biodiversity, a living nature. In order to preserve a living forest landscape in Sweden, all remaining natural and old-growth forests with high conservation values need to be protected. More than 1,800 forest-living plant and animal species are listed on the Swedish red-list as near-threatened and endangered species, and a large proportion of these species are linked to these forests.

According to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency only a few percent of high conservation value forests remain below the mountain region (sub-alpine forests) in Sweden. It is time to stop all old-growth forest logging plans. Moreover, suitable forest habitats need to be restored to reach sufficient area and quality in accordance with the recommendations of current nature conservation science.

The depletion of the forest ecosystem does not only force away a variety of forest species – it also has a negative impact on human beings. A living forest ecosystem is fundamental to essential processes such as regulation of air quality, climate regulation, water regulation, water purification, pollination, and mitigation of natural disasters.

A sustainable Swedish forestry, which takes the safeguarding of biodiversity seriously, cannot be achieved in a situation where 95 percent of the productive forests are exploited, and where only a few percent of the forest land are set aside for nature conservation. The Swedish Government and the Swedish Forest Industries Federation advocate further forestry intensification, with methods such as stump extraction, increased use of non-native tree species, restoration of ditches, and fertilization, which threaten the biodiversity even more. Sweden is committed, internationally and nationally, to stop the loss of biodiversity and it is our duty, to future generations, to abide by these obligations. The current negative trend must be reversed immediately and the Swedish Parliament and Government must take their responsibility.

Acclaimed Sports Illustrated and The Nation sportswriter Dave Zirin was in Vancouver from Jan 20-21 2010 to speak about activism, sports and the Olympics as part of a series entitled "Politics in the Ring."

Zirin talked about the idea of activist athletes, what they've fought for, and what they've opposed. From feminist uprisings against wearing corsets in tennis, to Muhammad Ali's activist conversion after his Olympic win, Zirin showed that sports has the power to extend beyond just spectacle.

Versed in the history of sports, Zirin was critical of the hypocritical stance the International Olympic Committee has taken on several issues over the past century.

Před obřadní síní se sešli Honzovi příbuzní, přátelé rodiny, kamarádi, známí, antifašisté, skinheadi, punkeři... Přišlo asi na čtyři sta lidí. Někteří se po obřadu vypravili na smuteční pochod k místu, kde byl Honza smrtelně zraněn. Tam položili květiny a zapálili svíčky. Dva roky od této události a jako vzpomínku na Honzu přinášíme videoklip, který pohřeb stručně dokumentuje. Jako hudební doprovod je použita píseň "Heart full of Pride" Honzovy oblíbené kapely Perkele, která také zazněla při samotném smutečním obřadu.

(pl) Na kanale filmowym niezależnych filmowców z poznańskiej Szum.TV udostępniony został krótkometrażowy film dokumentalny pt. "Płyta", przedstawiający pokrótce początki działalności związkowej Marcela Szarego i okoliczności, które ukształtowały obecne poglądy i sposoby walki związkowca.

Marcel Szary jest działaczem Ogólnopolskiego Związku Zawodowego Inicjatywa Pracownicza oraz przedstawicielem załogi w zarządzie zakładów H. Cegielski w Poznaniu. W czasach PRL-u był działaczem podziemnej „Solidarności”. Nie zgadzając się z jej ugodową polityką zrezygnował z przynależności do związku. W czerwcu 2004 roku stał się jednym z organizatorów komisji Inicjatywy Pracowniczej w HCP, która obecnie walczy w obronie miejsc pracy oraz o lepsze warunki dla tych, którzy nie padli ofiarą tegorocznych masowych zwolnień.

Film nawiązuje przy tym do wieców nazywanych potocznie "płytami". Jest to tradycyjna forma okazywania przez pracowników HCP niezadowolenia z warunków pracy i płacy, której tradycja sięga lat 50-tych. W 2007 i 2008 roku na terenie Cegielskiego wybuchł zatarg płacowy, podczas którego odbyło się kilka "płyt". Za "organizację i kierowanie" tymi spontanicznymi strajkami Szary został skazany przez Sąd Rejonowy w Poznaniu na karę wysokiej grzywny.

Marcel Szary je členem Celopolského odborového svazu Iniciativa pracujících a představitelem zaměstnanců ve vedení podniku H. Cegielski v Poznani (HCP). Před rokem 1989 byl členem podzemní „Solidarności”. Avšak nesouhlasil s její reformistickou politikou a vystoupil ze svazu. V červnu roku 2004 se stal jedním z organizátorů základní organizace Iniciativy pracujících v HCP, která v současnosti bojuje za záchranu pracovních míst a za lepší pracovní podmínky pro ty, kteří se nestali obětmi letošního masového propuštění.
Film přitom navazuje na akce nazývané hovorově "płytami" (označení divoké stávky). Je to tradiční forma, jak zaměstnanci HCP ukazují svojí nespokojenost s pracovními podmínkami a mzdami, její tradice sahá do 50. let. V letech 2007 a 2008 na půdě HCP propukl mzdový spor, během kterého proběhlo několik "płyt". Za "organizaci a řízení" těchto spontánních stávek byl Szary odsouzen Obvodním soudem v Poznani vysokou finanční pokutou.
Film byl realizován společnými silami Szum.TV, visualArt a Emila Gawina, délka 12 min.
