(en) “Our Spirits Don't Speak English: Indian Boarding School" is a Native American perspective on Indian Boarding Schools. This DVD produced by Rich-Heape Films, Inc. uncovers the dark history of U.S. Government policy which took Indian children from their homes, forced them into boarding schools and enacted a policy of educating them in the ways of Western Society. This DVD gives a voice to the countless Indian children forced through a system designed to strip them of their Native American culture, heritage and traditions.
(en) Palm oil has become one of the most ubiquitous products around, found in everything from lipstick to margarine and toothpaste. It’s estimated that one in every ten supermarket products contain it, usually described simply as ‘vegetable oil’. Now Palm Oil is being touted as a sustainable alternative to the world’s energy problems. But environmentalists claim palm oil cultivation is contributing to global warming and threatening biodiversity, leading to rivers being polluted and indigenous people being forced from their land. Much of the world’s palm oil comes from plantations in Indonesia. It’s grown on land ‘reclaimed’ from the rainforest, driving animals like orang-utans into extinction.

Le carbone dégagé par cette gigantesque combustion a fait de l'Indonésie le troisieme pays émetteur de gaz a effets de serre de la planete, apres la Chine et les Etats-Unis. Des palmiers a huile remplacent la perte de l'ancienne foret qui occupait 80% de l'espace. Une monoculture rentable, a perte de vue. Depuis peu, l'huile de palme entre dans la composition du carburant. Une loi, votée par le Parlement européen, impose un taux de 5,75% de biocarburants d'ici 2010 et de 10% d'ici 2020. Conséquence directe de cette loi : l'importation massive d'huile de palme sur notre continent. Une huile beaucoup moins chere que l'huile de colza et produite avec un faible cout de main d'ouvre. Malaisie et Indonésie, les deux principaux pays producteurs étendent leurs cultures de palmiers a huile sur tout leur territoire. Une ruée vers l'or vert aux conséquences dramatiques : la déforestation massive de la foret vierge, un trésor inestimable pour la biodiversité
(cz) Z palmového oleje se stává stále důležitější komodita a podle odhadů ho v sobě obsahuje každý desátý výrobek na trhu. A zatímco Evropa si na něj pořád zvyká, země jihovýchodní Asie na něm postavily svou ekonomiku. Vedle potravinářského a chemického průmyslu totiž slouží i jako alternativa k fosilním palivům a možná odpověď na hrozící energetickou krizi. Obrovský boom pěstování palmy olejné s sebou ale samozřejmě nese i problémy. Neúměrně zatěžuje životní prostředí a lidé tak stojí před dalším důležitým rozhodnutím.

He was deeply affected by the enchanting natural environment and the friendly locals. But when, after returning home, he started to look deeper into the country's culture, he realized that he had actually been in an undeclared war zone. In Melbourne, he got to know a community of musicians who were on the run from the Indonesian army and had fled from West Papua to Australia. Through their stories, he gained insight into the true history of the country. Strange Birds in Paradise is a journey into just some of the more than 250 West Papuan cultures. Intercut with Hill-Smith's travelogue and short animations, the interviews paint a picture not only of a country with a rich musical tradition and breathtaking nature, but also of a country weighed down by Indonesian military oppression. A large number of retired army generals have substantial economic interests in West Papua, and the army uses extreme violence to keep the lid on the West Papuan population's independence movement. In 2006, Hill-Smith decided to return to West Papua, this time equipped with a professional camera and all the knowledge he had gained about the country's history.

(en) This documentary presents footage of the first contact between the highland tribes of Papua New Guinea, and European explorers. In the 1930s three Australian's, Michael, Daniel and James Leahy were the first white people to venture into the vast New Guinean interior. They searched for gold and found 1 million highland tribespeople who had previously had no contact with the outside world. Amazingly, they took a film camera with them. Original footage of the 'first contact' between Papuan highlanders and Australian gold prospectors in the 1930's, together with reflections from surviving participants on their swift introduction to Western colonialism.

Clashes between police and villagers over gold extraction rights in one remote region led to RTZ’s abrupt departure - together with most of the gold. Pollution from RTZ’s copper mine on the island of Bougainville has been a focus of seething resentment since 1988. And now, overriding local objections, extractors have moved in, unannounced, to develop a new island gold mine using cyanide.

Strety medzi políciou a vidiečanmi kvôli ťažobným právam na zlato v jednej odľahlej oblasti viedlo k náhlemu odchodu RTZ - a to aj spolu s väčšinou zlata. Znečistenie z bane RTZ na meď na ostrove Bougainville bolo ohniskom kypiacim nevôlu od roku 1988. A teraz, prevalcujúc námietky miestych, nasťahovali sa sem neohlásene ťažbári, aby tu založili novú baňu na zlato, ktoré by získavali pomocou kyanidu.

The San Francisco Peaks stand high above the northern Arizona landscape, a forested refuge rising over 5,000 feet above the Colorado Plateau, south of the Grand Canyon and just north of the small city of Flagstaff. Since time immemorial the San Francisco Peaks have been held sacred by over 13 Native American tribes. These nations have revered "the peaks" as the home of their deities, a place to gather special herbs, a place of emergence and, for tribes like the Navajo and Hopi, this mountain is deeply rooted in essence of their ways of life.
In spite of strong tribal opposition, The San Francisco Peaks have endured a history of development. Although tribal leaders, environmentalists and then Secretary of the Interior, Bruce Babbitt, successfully stopped mining activities in the late 1990s, the struggles to protect the sacred mountain are not over. Today, the sacred mountain is part of public lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service, which includes winter recreation in its mission by leasing out 777 acres of the mountain to the Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort. The Snowbowl Effect explores the controversy surrounding the recently proposed ski resort expansion and snowmaking with wastewater on the San Francisco Peaks as Native American tribal officials and spiritual leaders, Forest Service officials, and concerned citizens discuss the issues: sacred lands protection, public health concerns associated with groundbreaking studies on wastewater, economic misconceptions, threats to the environment, global warming and a small community caught in the conflict. (en) On June 26, 1975, during a period of high tensions on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, two FBI agents were killed in a shootout with a group of Indians. Although several men were charged with killing the agents, only one, Leonard Peltier, was found guilty. This film describes the events surrounding the shootout and suggests that Peltier was unjustly convicted.

(en) Narrated by Indian-born actress Joanna Lumley, “Mine” tells the story of the Dongria Kondh tribe in Orissa, India, who are struggling to protect the Niyamgiri hills from an open-cast bauxite mine proposed by Vedanta Resources.
The Dongria Kondh regard themselves as the traditional caretakers of the hills, which they believe to home to their god, Niyamraja Penu. They say the hills must remain inviolate, and protected at all costs. Without the Niyamgiri hills, the Kondh say, “there is no life for us.”

(en) When bulldozers came to the ancestral lands of the Iban, in the Sarawak region of Malaysia, Segan Anak Degon stood up to defend his land.
Today Segan is the the only person out of 101 families whose land remains unaffected by the oil palm that swept through the region.
What Rainforest? is a 36-minute documentary about his struggle.

“But What Rainforest? neither thrilled nor entertained.
“Of course, the co-producers of this 36-minute documentary – Hilary Chiew and chi too – never intended for it to. Instead, they succeeded all too well in making you burn as you watch the outright trampling of basic rights of the indigenous Iban folk and their ancestral lands.
“When oil palm barons began encroaching onto their native customary rights (NCR) land with claims of buyovers sanctioned by the government, the families in Kampung Lebur, near Kuching in Sarawak, were devastated.
“One man stood his ground. Segan anak Degon was the only one of 101 families who managed to hold off an oil palm plantation from replacing his ancestral patch of forest which included his paddy field and fruit trees planted by his forefathers.
“Like his fellow villagers, the forest was the sole source of livelihood for Segan and his wife. But unlike his fellow villagers, Segan fought … and won. And this is his story.
