(en) Barbara Kopple's documentary account of the 1974 strike of Kentucky mine workers is arguably one of the finest documentaries ever made in the U.S. and possibly the best on the problems of organised labour. The strike began when the miners working for the Eastover Mining Co. joined the UMW, and its corporate parent, Duke Power, refused to sign the standard union contract. By living with the 180-odd families involved in the strike, Kopple shows the backbreaking burdens of the miners' life in the best of times and the looming fear of destitution in the worst.

As the strikers strive to remain united through a difficult year, Kopple photographs the picketing, the company's use of state troopers to keep the roads open for scabs, the showdowns between the miners and strikebreakers brandishing firearms. After several shootings, one miner is finally killed. During the man's wake, a memorable sequence, his mother collapses. While the film is unabashedly partisan, it's worth remembering that the company's refusal to sign a contract was condemned by the National Labor Relations Board and that the corporation agreed to sign only under heavy pressure from federal mediators. The Oscar-winning HARLAN COUNTY, USA is a landmark in the history of American documentary filmmaking.

Velmi silné jsou hlavně scény noční přestřelky se stávkokazy, pohřeb zastřeleného horníka a vůbec celé prostředí amerického hornického městečka je šokující. Vše je podbarveno originálními písněmi zpívaných a mnohdy i složených samotnými horníky.

(en) Carmen works the graveyard shift in one of Tijuana’s maquiladoras, the multinationally-owned factories that came to Mexico for its cheap labor. After making television components all night, Carmen comes home to a shack she built out of recycled garage doors, in a neighborhood with no sewage lines or electricity. She suffers from kidney damage and lead poisoning from her years of exposure to toxic chemicals. She earns six dollars a day. But Carmen is not a victim. She is a dynamic young woman, busy making a life for herself and her children.

As Carmen and a million other maquiladora workers produce televisions, electrical cables, toys, clothes, batteries and IV tubes, they weave the very fabric of life for consumer nations. They also confront labor violations, environmental devastation and urban chaos -- life on the frontier of the global economy. In MAQUILAPOLIS, Carmen and her colleague Lourdes reach beyond the daily struggle for survival to organize for change: Carmen takes a major television manufacturer to task for violating her labor rights. Lourdes pressures the government to clean up a toxic waste dump left behind by a departing factory.

As they work for change, the world changes too: a global economic crisis and the availability of cheaper labor in China begin to pull the factories away from Tijuana, leaving Carmen, Lourdes and their colleagues with an uncertain future.

Pracuje zde více než milion lidí, často za mizivou mzdu a v nevyhovujících pracovních podmínkách. Dynamická Carmen spolu se skupinou žen z Tijuany se rozhodne nahlas vyslovit otázku svých zaměstnaneckých práv a dalších problémů, s nimiž se denně setkává. Svou činnost průběžně natáčí na video. Tvůrci filmu zdařile prokládají tyto strohé záznamy stylizovanými poetickými pasážemi a vytvářejí tak velmi osobní snímek.

(en) (translator) Zanon's owner, an Italian who began doing business during the last military dictatorship and continued for all democratic governments, decided to leave out of work more than half of its employees on the grounds of: the country's crisis. Under its terms, or drastically reducing staff or closing the factory. In October 2001, the Zanon workers took the decision to continue producing without the bosses. The economic results were successful (sales growth, creation of new jobs) and political scope of what seemed like an adventure, more extensive than one might think. Incalcaterra records the organization of the workers inside the factory and the evolution of the legal dispute out of it. The self does not seem a bad idea after all.

(sk) (translator) Zanon majiteľ, Talian, ktorý začal obchodovať počas poslednej vojenskej diktatúry a pokračoval pre všetky demokratické vlády, sa rozhodol odísť z práce viac než polovicu svojich zamestnancov, z toho dôvodu, kedy: v krajine krízy. V jeho rámci, alebo výrazne znížiť zamestnancami, alebo uzatvorenie továrne. V októbri 2001, pracovníci Zanonu sa rozhodli pokračovať vo výrobe bez šéfov. Hospodárske výsledky boli úspešné (rast tržieb, tvorba nových pracovných miest) a politický rozsah toho, čo sa zdalo ako dobrodružstvo, rozsiahlejšie, než by sa mohlo zdať. Incalcaterra záznamy organizácie pracujúcich v závode a vývoj právneho sporu z nej. Ja sa nezdá byť zlý nápad.

(en) How an Austrian farmer simply observes nature and survives without depending on subsidies, chemical fertilisers or pesticides of any kind.

Sepp Holzer created an edible landscape at 1500 metres above sea level - one of the few perfectly working permaculture systems in Europe.

Between the pinetree monocultures of Austria he built a fishpond system with his own water power station, planted 9000 fruit trees of the most various kinds in connection with many other plants to support each other (plant families). Thirty different types of potatoes, many different grains, fruits, vegetables, herbs and wildflowers are growing just about everywhere - in the forest, on extremely steep hills, on rocky soil, on pathways, around ponds, as well as raised beds. All of this he grows without the use of any pesticides, herbicides or fertilizer. Holzer says: "I couldn't understand that still everybody at the agricultural schools told you these chemicals are useful. They drowned us in brochures of the chemical fertilizers with the latest information on how many kilos of which stuff you should get. But if you follow their instructions you only have trouble, your purse is empty, you have a lot of hard work to do, and you're destroying all this important life in your ground, and your own health with it. Sorry, but I really don't want to spoil my own land with this poison!"

Instead of using chemicals, he simply observes nature and finds out which plants support each other. In autumn he collects many seeds and stores them, and whenever he can, he throws this seed mixture on his ground. Along pathways, on new patches of terraces, anywhere. There is no square meter of ground with only one type of plant. All plants grow together and support each other. No plant or insect is unwanted. Diversity is a key word for Holzer, not only on the level of plants but also on the economic level. Holzer now has a lot of different sources of income. He sells all the products of his land; fruit trees, fruits, grains, vegetables, fish, and mushrooms, all guaranteed biological. Further, he sells seeds of many of these plants including very rare ones. Next to that, Holzer gives advice to farmers who want to change their farms into permaculture places or people who want to build up a permaculture garden. Sepp also gives guided tours over his own property to interested people, who have a growing interest in permaculture. He also gives seminars on old techniques such as grinding your own grains, making your own bread and butter etc. He also rents out his mountain huts for people who want to spend time in nature as a holiday. So it looks like Holzer will never be short of ideas, his economic success is an exception in the whole area.

Most farmers in Europe are completely dependent on subsidies. The EU supports farmers, especially in disadvantaged regions in order to keep the cultivation of the land alive. The price is high: 54.3 % of the EU expenses (=41 billion ECU) are flowing into agriculture! 1997 it was 80 billion DM (even though the farmers are only 4.4 % of the working population).

Sepp Holzer: "I find it painful to watch all these farmers going broke and selling their land for next to nothing, mostly to rich academic people who know even less what to do with the land. If these farmers only knew what they could do with their land! Nature has so much to offer, so many possibilities!"

The required workforce is recruited from India's poorer regions, where survival is being made more and more difficult for the rural populace. This is why 4.5 million industrial workers in Southern Delhi are willing to ruin their health for wages their families can hardly survive on.

People are almost powerless in this situation, but still they try to find effective ways to collectively resist.

the smoky heat of an active volcano and the treacherous trip back down. Blood, fire and stench are routine for workers at a crowded open-air slaughterhouse in Nigeria. Pakistani men use little more than their bare hands to dismantle an abandoned oil tanker for scrap metal. Steelworkers in China fear they could be a dying breed. Today’s manual laborers are no longer celebrated with hymns of praise.

Ukrajinští havíři prolézají nízkými štolami uzavřených šachet, aby si naloupali trochu uhlí na zátop, asijští nosiči síry podnikají před očima zvědavých turistů dlouhé pochody se sírou v křehkých koších. Nigerijští řezníci zpracovávají stáda dobytka dlouhými noži přímo na zkrvavené zemi jatek. Čínští dělníci budují obří továrny nového impéria, zatímco Íránci na břehu rozřezávají zrezivělý tanker. (cz) 30 nezaměstnaných obráběčů autosoučástek z předměstí Buenos Aires jednoho dne nakráčí do své uzavřené továrny, rozbalí karimatky a odmítá odejít. Jediné, co požadují, je znovurozjetí výroby. Avšak tento jednoduchý čin - převzetí - má sílu postavit debatu o globalizaci na hlavu. Dělníci, vyzbrojeni pouze praky a udržujíce víru v dílenskou demokracii, čelí šéfům, bankéřům a celému systému, který vidí jejich milované fabriky jenom jako kupu železa určenou do sběru. Tvůrci filmu, Avi Lewis(jeden z nejznámějších kanadských novinářů) a Naomi Klein(autorka mezinárodního bestselleru No logo, radikálního ekonomického manifestu pro 21. století) zavedou diváky do životů dělníků a jejich rodin, kteří musí bojovat za svoji práci a důstojnost proti továrníkům, politikům a soudcům. Výsledkem je politický thriller z reálného života, který vrhá dělníky proti místní vládnoucí elitě a mocným sílám globálního kapitalismu.

(pl) Na kanale filmowym niezależnych filmowców z poznańskiej Szum.TV udostępniony został krótkometrażowy film dokumentalny pt. "Płyta", przedstawiający pokrótce początki działalności związkowej Marcela Szarego i okoliczności, które ukształtowały obecne poglądy i sposoby walki związkowca.

Marcel Szary jest działaczem Ogólnopolskiego Związku Zawodowego Inicjatywa Pracownicza oraz przedstawicielem załogi w zarządzie zakładów H. Cegielski w Poznaniu. W czasach PRL-u był działaczem podziemnej „Solidarności”. Nie zgadzając się z jej ugodową polityką zrezygnował z przynależności do związku. W czerwcu 2004 roku stał się jednym z organizatorów komisji Inicjatywy Pracowniczej w HCP, która obecnie walczy w obronie miejsc pracy oraz o lepsze warunki dla tych, którzy nie padli ofiarą tegorocznych masowych zwolnień.

Film nawiązuje przy tym do wieców nazywanych potocznie "płytami". Jest to tradycyjna forma okazywania przez pracowników HCP niezadowolenia z warunków pracy i płacy, której tradycja sięga lat 50-tych. W 2007 i 2008 roku na terenie Cegielskiego wybuchł zatarg płacowy, podczas którego odbyło się kilka "płyt". Za "organizację i kierowanie" tymi spontanicznymi strajkami Szary został skazany przez Sąd Rejonowy w Poznaniu na karę wysokiej grzywny.

IPNa filmovém kanálu nezávislých filmařů z poznaňské Szum.TV byl zpřístupněn krátkometrážní dokumentární film "Płyta", představující ve zkratce počátky a odborářskou aktivitu Marcela Szarego a okolnosti, které utvářely jeho současné názory a způsoby odborářského boje.
Marcel Szary je členem Celopolského odborového svazu Iniciativa pracujících a představitelem zaměstnanců ve vedení podniku H. Cegielski v Poznani (HCP). Před rokem 1989 byl členem podzemní „Solidarności”. Avšak nesouhlasil s její reformistickou politikou a vystoupil ze svazu. V červnu roku 2004 se stal jedním z organizátorů základní organizace Iniciativy pracujících v HCP, která v současnosti bojuje za záchranu pracovních míst a za lepší pracovní podmínky pro ty, kteří se nestali obětmi letošního masového propuštění.
Film přitom navazuje na akce nazývané hovorově "płytami" (označení divoké stávky). Je to tradiční forma, jak zaměstnanci HCP ukazují svojí nespokojenost s pracovními podmínkami a mzdami, její tradice sahá do 50. let. V letech 2007 a 2008 na půdě HCP propukl mzdový spor, během kterého proběhlo několik "płyt". Za "organizaci a řízení" těchto spontánních stávek byl Szary odsouzen Obvodním soudem v Poznani vysokou finanční pokutou.
Film byl realizován společnými silami Szum.TV, visualArt a Emila Gawina, délka 12 min.

(en) Based on an actual strike against the Empire Zinc Mine in New Mexico, the film deals with the prejudice against the Mexican-American workers, who struck to attain wage parity with Anglo workers in other mines and to be treated with dignity by the bosses. The film is an early treatment of feminism, because the wives of the miners play a pivotal role in the strike, against their husbands wishes. In the end, the greatest victory for the workers and their families is the realization that prejudice and poor treatment are conditions that are not always imposed by outside forces. This film was written, directed and produced by members of the original "Hollywood Ten," who were blacklisted for refusing to answer Congressional inquiries on First Amendment grounds.

(cz) Americký film „Sůl země" byl natočen podle skutečné události stávky horníků zinkových dolů v oblasti Bayard v Novém Mexiku (USA) v r. 1951. Film vypráví o průběhu patnáctiměsíční stávky, která skončila po houževnatém boji horníků i jejich žen vítězně. Film byl po prvé uveden mimo území USA na VIII. mezinárodním filmovém festivalu v Karlových Varech v r. 1954, kde získal (společně se sovětským filmem „Věrní přátelé") Velkou cenu. Herečce Rosauře Revueltas, jedné z hlavních hrdinek filmu, byla za životnou, se strhující pravdivostí a prostotou ztvárněnou postavu mexické hornické ženy i za její neohrožený postoj vůči nepřízni oficiálních kruhů při natáčení tohoto filmu, udělena Cena za ženský herecký výkon.
