The Shock Doctrine is the latest documentary from acclaimed director Michael Winterbottom, co-directed by Mat Whitecross. Based on Naomi Klein's bestselling book, The Shock Doctrine argues that America's 'free market' policies have come to dominate the world through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries.

Both the film and the book argue that governments all over the world exploit natural disasters, economic crises and wars to push through radical free market policies. Klein calls this 'disaster capitalism' and in her view, disaster capitalism is as effective as psychiatric shock therapy at wiping our collective memory.

The film concludes that the result is often catastrophic for ordinary people and hugely beneficial to big corporations. The documentary also adds to Klein's thesis - which was written before the recent market turmoil - and includes an analysis of how the financial world got into its current troubled state.

(sk) Dokument natoceny v produkci britskeho verejnopravniho Channelu 4 podle stejnojmene knihy novinarky, aktivistky a intelektualky Naomi Klein. "Šoková doktria" v tomto pripade znamena, ze pokud chce nekdo neco anebo nekoho zmenit, bude se mu to darit snaze, pokud vyuzije okamziku, kdy bude jedinec anebo skupina lidi zmatena, dezorientovana, v soku. Tato technika se da pouzit nejen na jednotlivce, ale i cele narody, ktere jsou po prirodnich, valecnych a jinych katastrofach obzvlastne snadno manipulovatelne a preprogramovatelne. V takovou chvili je mnohem snadnejsi provadet nepopularni ekonomicke zmeny, nebo prijimat zakony potlacujici lidska prava. Mnohe staty a spolecnosti tak dokazou kazdou krizi a valku velmi dobre vyuzit a vydelat na ni. Naomi Klein je tu kriticka vuci Miltonu Friedmanovi a jeho pokracovatelum a teoriim, podle nichz by stat mel prestat plnit mnohe sve socialni funkce (doprava, skolstvi) a nechat je na pospas volnemu trhu, a take vuci jeho vyuzivani prave zminenych ekonomickych sokovych terapii. Autorka knihy nebyla s vyslednou podobou dokumentu prilis spokojena a distancovala se od nej (nikoliv vsak kvuli obsahu, ale zvolene forme - pred manipulativnim hlasem vypravece doplnenym archivnimi ilustracemi a jeji prednaskou by pry dala prednost mozaice rozhovoru s ruznymi lidmi). Kdo chce vedet vic, necht sahne i po knize. Dokument je jeji zjednodusenou a zkracenou verzi.

Friedmanova teze, že jen krize vyvolává skutečnou změnu, je podle Naomi Kleinové ideologickým podkladem neoliberální svaté trojice - privatizace, deregulace a snižování sociálních výdajů - vůči níž se vymezuje také ve filmu natočeném podle její knihy o vzestupu katastrofického kapitalismu.

(en) (translator) Zanon's owner, an Italian who began doing business during the last military dictatorship and continued for all democratic governments, decided to leave out of work more than half of its employees on the grounds of: the country's crisis. Under its terms, or drastically reducing staff or closing the factory. In October 2001, the Zanon workers took the decision to continue producing without the bosses. The economic results were successful (sales growth, creation of new jobs) and political scope of what seemed like an adventure, more extensive than one might think. Incalcaterra records the organization of the workers inside the factory and the evolution of the legal dispute out of it. The self does not seem a bad idea after all.

(es) El dueno de Zanón, un italiano que comenzó a hacer negocios durante la última dictadura militar y los continuó durante todos los gobiernos democráticos, decidió dejar sin trabajo a más de la mitad de sus empleados con el argumento de siempre: la crisis del país. Según sus términos, o se reducía drásticamente el personal o la fábrica cerraba. En octubre de 2001, los obreros de Zanón tomaron la decisión de continuar produciendo sin patrón. Los resultados económicos fueron exitosos (aumento de la facturación, creación de nuevos puestos de trabajo) y los alcances políticos de lo que parecía una aventura, más amplios de lo que pueda pensarse. Incalcaterra registra la organización de los obreros dentro de la fábrica y la evolución de la disputa legal fuera de ella. La autogestión no parece ser una mala idea, después de todo.

(sk) (translator) Zanon majiteľ, Talian, ktorý začal obchodovať počas poslednej vojenskej diktatúry a pokračoval pre všetky demokratické vlády, sa rozhodol odísť z práce viac než polovicu svojich zamestnancov, z toho dôvodu, kedy: v krajine krízy. V jeho rámci, alebo výrazne znížiť zamestnancami, alebo uzatvorenie továrne. V októbri 2001, pracovníci Zanonu sa rozhodli pokračovať vo výrobe bez šéfov. Hospodárske výsledky boli úspešné (rast tržieb, tvorba nových pracovných miest) a politický rozsah toho, čo sa zdalo ako dobrodružstvo, rozsiahlejšie, než by sa mohlo zdať. Incalcaterra záznamy organizácie pracujúcich v závode a vývoj právneho sporu z nej. Ja sa nezdá byť zlý nápad.

(en) A documentary that tracks the evolution of global capitalism from the ’70s until today, considering the position of Greece in the global economy but also the traps of the so called “free market system”, such like… debt! It also explains “the concepts of pernicious and illegitimate debts of the Greek economy”, after talking to economists, journalists, intellectuals, politicians and other specialists from around the world such as David Harvey, Samir Amin, Kostas Lapavitsas, Gerald Ntimenil, Alain Badiou, The President of CADTM Eric Toussaint, the Argentine director Fernando Solanas, journalists as Avi Lewis (writer / director of the documentary The Take – The seizure), Jean Katrmer (Liberation), the Second World War Greek Veteran Manolis Glezos and the vice president of the German left party “Die Linke” Zara Vagkenknecht.

Aris Hadjistefanou and Katerina Kitidi, inform us of similar situations prevailed in some Latin American countries, such as Argentina and Ecuador, countries that also faced unbearable debt. Through shining descriptions and interesting analysis, we see the disastrous effects of the International Monetary Fund dominance in the living standards of those countries. The imposed austerity measures had as a result that whole populations confronted the nightmare of mass unemployment and poverty.

In Ecuador, however, the Socialist government of Rafael Correa, set up a Commission of Public Debt, as an alternative solution. A similar effort could begin in Greece, with dozens of international known intellectuals, such like the American linguist Noam Chomsky, signing in favour. Nevertheless, the Greek ruling party (PASOK) refuses to implement such a plan, while its leadership constantly has threatened with expulsion members who are against the IMF memorandum.

(en) This is not a documentary for the faint-hearted but it is a documentary that should be viewed by as many people as possible. Winner of Best Documentary Short in the recent Durango Independent Film Festival, and directed by Moez Moez, "Green" documents the last hours of a female orangutan's life.

She is first seen packed into a duffel bag, her head bumping from side to side as she is driven in the back of a pickup truck. She is taken to a clinic but it is too late to save her. It is almost as though the life is being sucked from her as her environment is destroyed. She becomes just another victim of deforestation and palm oil plantations.

The film portrays the beauty and diversity of Green's once lush ecosystem through from elephants, a variety of primates to dragonflies. However the loggers soon move in and the destruction commences.

The documentary tracks each of the threats that orangutans face - from the timber industry supplying the exotic furniture trade or the pulp and paper market through to the palm oil industry feeding the insatiable demand for food, cosmetics and biodiesel. The illegal pet trade thrives in the middle of the destruction. The film also documents the soul-destroying situation of wild animals in captivity.

It pulls no punches. We cannot absolve ourselves from it as it is us, the global consumers, who are the cause. A list of "credits" at the end of the film runs through not only the various companies involved along the supply chain but finishes pointedly on "the consumers around the world." Unfortunately this is one credit where you won't want to take a bow.

“Green” is 48 min long, it is available for free download for all private and public screenings. The film is in international version accessible to all nationalities, produced independently and free of all commercial or political attachment. Please don’t hesitate to screen the film wherever you feel appropriate.

(en) Utilizing excerpts from the award-winning non-fiction text “A Small Place” by Jamaica Kincaid, Life & Debt is a woven tapestry of sequences focusing on the stories of individual Jamaicans whose strategies for survival and parameters of day-to-day existence are determined by the U.S. and other foreign economic agendas. By combining traditional documentary telling with a stylized narrative framework, the complexity of international lending, structural adjustment policies and free trade will be understood in the context of the day-to-day realities of the people whose lives they impact.

The film opens with the arrival of vacationers to the island– utilizing Ms. Kincaids text as voice-over, we begin to understand the profound contrasts behind the breathtaking natural beauty of the island. The poetic urgency of Ms. Kincaids text lends a first-person understanding of the legacy of the country’s colonial past, and to it’s present day economic challenges. For example, as we see a montage of the vacationer in her hotel, voice-over: “When you sit down to eat your delicious meal, it’s better that you don’t know that most of what you are eating came off a ship from Miami. There is a world of something in this, but I can’t go into it right now.” (adapted excerpt “A Small Place”)

As we begin to understand the post-colonial landscape outlined in Ms. Kincaids text, we cut to archival footage of Former Prime Minister Michael Manley in a post-independence speech condemning the IMF stating that “the Jamaican government will not accept anybody, anywhere in the world telling us what to do in our own country. Above all, we’re not for sale.”

(en) Large retailers keep their prices low by importing products from Third World countries. North-west India is a region known for its production of cotton. Local families here are completely dependent on its growth and sale, and do their best to nip in the bud any potential danger to their crops. That includes using foreign anti-parasite chemicals, which they spray several times more often than is recommended. Labels warning against frequent usage are only in Danish. Such pesticides are banned in the European Union. Even their producer Cheminova does not use them in Denmark - only in India. The result of using cheap pesticides in terms of number of deaths is comparable with World War I. However, the Danish chemical maker is none too concerned by this. After seeing a documentary on the practice the managers of a retail chain which buys cotton in India are shocked, but low prices are their chief selling point. Their customers, meanwhile, might be able to respond to such practices, but the majority have no idea what is going on. The chain declares publicly that it maintains high ethical, environmental and moral standards.

(en) Indymedia activists shot hundreds of hours documenting the 2003 FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas) protests in Miami and shaped it into a documentary that cuts through the mass media blackout to reveal the brutal repression and assault on civil liberties that took place, as well as the inspiring alternatives to capitalist globalization that were also in full effect in Miami.

Martial Law was declared in downtown Miami in November of 2003 to provide security for the FTAA Economic Summit. Blatant and unashamed police brutality is caught on film. The US Federal government granted the State of Florida $8.5 million dollars from the $87 billion allotted to Congress to fight the "War on Terror," in order to provide "security" for the FTAA summit. Tazers and "non-lethal" weaponry was pilot tested at this event with little to no instruction on proper handling of the equipment or restrictions on use. This film serves as an example of how the war on terror is nothing more than a war on the American citizenry, and is meant as a war on dissent. Celý film je protknutý atmosférou USA po 11. září 2001 a války v Iráku. Dává nahlédnout pod pokličku neoliberální politiky očima lidí angažovaných ve věcech, na které má tato politika přímí vliv, a zabývá se i formováním strategií, jaké by mělo hnutí proti ekonomické globalizaci používat v podmínkách „války proti terorismu".
