(en) Based on the real-life experiences of Mende Nazer,the story unfolds as twelve-year-old Malia,daughter of champion wrestler Bah,is abducted from her Sudanese village in the Nubar Mountains by pro-government Arab militia and sold into slavery to a woman in Khartoum,who beats her for touching her daughter. After six years she is sent to London,where her name is changed,but her miserable life of servitude continues. Her passport is taken and she is told that her father will die if she goes to the authorities. Fortunately she meets a sympathetic person who seems to offer her the hope of escape and reunion with Bah,back in Sudan. For all the film's optimism an end title states that there are around 5,000 'slave' workers currently in Britain.

Příběh se odvíjí od okamžiku, kdy je dvanáctiletá dívka Malia po přepadení své vesnice v súdánských Núbijských horách provládní arabskou milicí unesena a v hlavním městě Chartúmu prodána do otroctví. Odtržena od rodiny a své země je zde pak držena jako otrokyně v rodině súdánského diplomata, dokud není poslána k jeho příbuzným do Londýna, kde je nadále vystavena špatnému zacházení ze strany svých "majitelů". Zoufalá mladá žena se nakonec náhodně setkává s jedním krajanem, s jehož pomocí se snaží uprchnout a znovu se shledat se svým otcem, který ji po celou dobu nepřestal hledat. Film poukazuje na fakt, že podobný osud v Londýně denně prožívá na 5 000 lidí, kteří zde údajně žijí jako novodobí otroci.

The Shock Doctrine is the latest documentary from acclaimed director Michael Winterbottom, co-directed by Mat Whitecross. Based on Naomi Klein's bestselling book, The Shock Doctrine argues that America's 'free market' policies have come to dominate the world through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries.

Both the film and the book argue that governments all over the world exploit natural disasters, economic crises and wars to push through radical free market policies. Klein calls this 'disaster capitalism' and in her view, disaster capitalism is as effective as psychiatric shock therapy at wiping our collective memory.

The film concludes that the result is often catastrophic for ordinary people and hugely beneficial to big corporations. The documentary also adds to Klein's thesis - which was written before the recent market turmoil - and includes an analysis of how the financial world got into its current troubled state.

"Šoková doktria" v tomto pripade znamena, ze pokud chce nekdo neco anebo nekoho zmenit, bude se mu to darit snaze, pokud vyuzije okamziku, kdy bude jedinec anebo skupina lidi zmatena, dezorientovana, v soku. Tato technika se da pouzit nejen na jednotlivce, ale i cele narody, ktere jsou po prirodnich, valecnych a jinych katastrofach obzvlastne snadno manipulovatelne a preprogramovatelne. V takovou chvili je mnohem snadnejsi provadet nepopularni ekonomicke zmeny, nebo prijimat zakony potlacujici lidska prava. Mnohe staty a spolecnosti tak dokazou kazdou krizi a valku velmi dobre vyuzit a vydelat na ni. Naomi Klein je tu kriticka vuci Miltonu Friedmanovi a jeho pokracovatelum a teoriim, podle nichz by stat mel prestat plnit mnohe sve socialni funkce (doprava, skolstvi) a nechat je na pospas volnemu trhu, a take vuci jeho vyuzivani prave zminenych ekonomickych sokovych terapii. Autorka knihy nebyla s vyslednou podobou dokumentu prilis spokojena a distancovala se od nej (nikoliv vsak kvuli obsahu, ale zvolene forme - pred manipulativnim hlasem vypravece doplnenym archivnimi ilustracemi a jeji prednaskou by pry dala prednost mozaice rozhovoru s ruznymi lidmi). Kdo chce vedet vic, necht sahne i po knize. Dokument je jeji zjednodusenou a zkracenou verzi.

Friedmanova teze, že jen krize vyvolává skutečnou změnu, je podle Naomi Kleinové ideologickým podkladem neoliberální svaté trojice - privatizace, deregulace a snižování sociálních výdajů - vůči níž se vymezuje také ve filmu natočeném podle její knihy o vzestupu katastrofického kapitalismu.

Being different than others, and to confront the community pressure are not always easy. Especially if you are a gay in a Muslim country such as Egypt or Iran you have to face the fact that you may have jail sentence, be tortured or be punished by death for the homosexual act. According to the Islamic law, a homosexual should be thrown from a mountain or stoned to death. Ibn Abbas, Muhammad's cousin, reports how homosexuals were punished in Muhammad's period: "If you find anyone doing as Lot's people did, kill the one who does it, and the one to whom it is done" (Abu Dawud no. 4447)

A Jihad for Love dares to be the voice of the silenced ones and tells the struggles of gay/lesbian people from Egypt, Iran, India and so on. Some decided to get marry with a woman, some leaved their country to avoid the death penalty, some risked to be away from their home and chose to be a refugee to live with their real identities.

This is their tragic story.

The film also depicts the ability of women and children to handle their everyday life after a dramatic war experience. Many of them live in tents or in ruins without walls or roofs. They are all in need of money, food, water and electricity. Others have lost family members, or are left with seriously injured children. Can war solve conflicts or create peace? The film follows three children through the war and the period after the ceasefire.

Všichni jsou v nouzi bez peněz, jídla, vody a elektřiny. Vše, co se podaří propašovat tunely je velmi drahé. Mnozí přišli o rodinné příslušníky, nebo jsou ponecháni s těžce zraněnými dětmi. Může taková válka řešit konflikty, či dokonce vytvořit mír? Film sleduje tři děti v době války a v období po příměří.

Sex in a Cold Climate documents the testimony of four women who sexually and cruelly abused in the Magdalene Asylum (the name comes from a biblical figure, Mary Magdalene) run by Catholic nuns in Ireland. When the documentary first aired, it was watched by nearly three million people and encouraged hundreds of women who abused in the Asylums (a real hell for children) to reveal themselves. Aside from the film the Magdalene Sisters, which was inspired by the documentary, it's far more shocking to listen to the real victims and realize that how memories of these horrific events haunted them and affected and shattered their later life.

(en) The late Rachel Corrie (1979 - 2003) was articulate, straightforward and resolute. Her castigation of Israel's military occupation of the Palestinian people and the Israeli Government's disregard for the safety of Israelis and Palestinians rang with clarity. Through peace activism she ascertained the facts on the ground. She called it as she saw it.
The documentary, "Rachel Corrie: An American Conscience," chronicles her humanitarian work with the International Solidarity Movement in Rafah, Gaza Strip, just prior to her murder in March 2003. While Corrie stood in front of a Palestinian home to prevent its demolition, an Israeli soldier in a Caterpillar D-9 bulldozer crushed her.
Director Yahya Barakat, a professor in the Mass Media and TV Department at Al-Quds University in Jerusalem, edited 80 hours of film footage from Gaza, the West Bank and Olympia, Washington for two years. He created a cinematic collage of international voices; people who work for peace and who support the Palestinians in their daily life activities. Through interviews, Barakat presents a collective chastisement of the military occupation, the U.S. and Israeli Governments, as well as U.S. mainstream media.

(en) In 1999, Australian Charlie Hill-Smith traveled as a tourist to West Papua (Irian Jaya), the Indonesian province on the island of Papua. He was deeply affected by the enchanting natural environment and the friendly locals. But when, after returning home, he started to look deeper into the country's culture, he realized that he had actually been in an undeclared war zone. In Melbourne, he got to know a community of musicians who were on the run from the Indonesian army and had fled from West Papua to Australia. Through their stories, he gained insight into the true history of the country. Strange Birds in Paradise is a journey into just some of the more than 250 West Papuan cultures. Intercut with Hill-Smith's travelogue and short animations, the interviews paint a picture not only of a country with a rich musical tradition and breathtaking nature, but also of a country weighed down by Indonesian military oppression. A large number of retired army generals have substantial economic interests in West Papua, and the army uses extreme violence to keep the lid on the West Papuan population's independence movement. In 2006, Hill-Smith decided to return to West Papua, this time equipped with a professional camera and all the knowledge he had gained about the country's history.
