(en) The National Geographic Channel looks 200 years into the future in Collapse, based on author Jared Diamond's book Collapse How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed, to examine how current
habits might affect humans' ability to survive. Directed by Noel Dockstader and narrated by Jamie Effros, this documentary examines how relationships among current methods could lead to human extinction.
Shortages of land, water, and energy could potentially propel civilization to collapse choices such as sustainable, local farming and organic practices are highlighted as ways to ensure life on Earth continues.

(en) "The Atomic Cafe recounts a defining period of 20th century history and serves as a chilling and often hilarious reminder of cold-war era paranoia in the United States, artfully presented through a collage of newsreel footage, government archives, military training films and fifties music. Inventive, sharply satiric montage of Cold War propaganda is hilarious, alarming by turns. Too repetitive for some, but cult-status film appeals to fans of black humor, social satire, offbeat documentaries."

(en) Ben Lewis (The King of Communism, Art Safari), traces the strange history of French atomic tests in the South Pacific from the 1960s to the 90s - a story of liberty, equality and radioactivity.
Thousands of Polynesian islanders were transformed from fishermen into nuclear technicians and Greenpeace activists sailed a tiny yacht into the test zone to end atmospheric testing.
The film also shows how a tiny group of Tahitian radicals set up the world's only anti-nuclear resistance cell and how some former test workers from France and Tahiti now suffer from cancers that many believe are linked to fall-out from the tests.

Toxic and radioactive waste pose environmental threats while the traditional economic and spiritual lives of the Aboriginal people who occupy this land have been violated. Given our limited knowledge of the associated risks, this film questions the validity of continuing the mining operations.

The War Game (1965)

The War Game (1965)
Documentary on possible nuclear war

INFO:
Peter Watkins, UK, english, 1965, 48 min.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059894/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_Game
http://www.csfd.cz/film/228832-war-game-the/?text=46743

(en) The War Game is a fictional, worst-case-scenario docu-drama about nuclear war and its aftermath in and around a typical English city. Although it won an Oscar for Best Documentary, it is fiction. It was intended as an hour-long program to air on BBC 1, but it was deemed too intense and violent to broadcast. It went to theatrical distribution as a feature film instead. Low-budget and shot on location, it strives for and achieves convincing and unflinching realism.

(en) It is the mid-1980's, during the Cold War. Ruth Beckett & Jimmy Kemp, residents of the British city of Sheffield are planning for their upcoming marriage and birth of their first child. Sheffield is home to a major R.A.F. base and has a major industrial base of steel production. But the Soviet Union marches troops into Iran, in a plan to convert it to a Soviet satellite state. The United States, the United Kingdom, and other members of NATO angrily condemn the Soviet aggression and military activity in the United Kingdom starts to mount, especially at the nearby R.A.F. base. The families of Ruth & Jimmy go about their daily business, paying little attention to what is going on in Iran. One spring day, without warning, the Soviet Union attacks the United Kingdom with ICBMs - two of which hit Sheffield, annihilating most of the city and its inhabitants. But what is even more horrifying is the aftermath that follows - a world without public order, clean food, water, electricity, or the ability to produce any of them. Ruth struggles for more than 10 years just to stay alive in this horrible, barren, radioactive homeland...

(cz) Děsivý, nesmírně působivý a strhující film.
