(en) Based on the real-life experiences of Mende Nazer,the story unfolds as twelve-year-old Malia,daughter of champion wrestler Bah,is abducted from her Sudanese village in the Nubar Mountains by pro-government Arab militia and sold into slavery to a woman in Khartoum,who beats her for touching her daughter. After six years she is sent to London,where her name is changed,but her miserable life of servitude continues. Her passport is taken and she is told that her father will die if she goes to the authorities. Fortunately she meets a sympathetic person who seems to offer her the hope of escape and reunion with Bah,back in Sudan. For all the film's optimism an end title states that there are around 5,000 'slave' workers currently in Britain.

Příběh se odvíjí od okamžiku, kdy je dvanáctiletá dívka Malia po přepadení své vesnice v súdánských Núbijských horách provládní arabskou milicí unesena a v hlavním městě Chartúmu prodána do otroctví. Odtržena od rodiny a své země je zde pak držena jako otrokyně v rodině súdánského diplomata, dokud není poslána k jeho příbuzným do Londýna, kde je nadále vystavena špatnému zacházení ze strany svých "majitelů". Zoufalá mladá žena se nakonec náhodně setkává s jedním krajanem, s jehož pomocí se snaží uprchnout a znovu se shledat se svým otcem, který ji po celou dobu nepřestal hledat. Film poukazuje na fakt, že podobný osud v Londýně denně prožívá na 5 000 lidí, kteří zde údajně žijí jako novodobí otroci.

Sweet Crude shows the humanity behind the statistics, events and highly sensationalized media portrayal of the region. Set against a stunning backdrop of Niger Delta footage, the film gives voice to the region’s complex mix of stakeholders and invites the audience to learn the deeper story.

The issues are local and human, yet they have far-reaching political, environmental and economic implications. It’s a powder-keg situation that affects the daily lives and futures of the people who live there. Left unchecked, its consequences will be felt around the globe. Yet barely anyone outside the Delta knows what’s really happening.

Why do we care enough to make this movie? Because raising awareness just might be the tipping point it takes to head off civil war. Because the kids of the Delta deserve a future. Because what happens in Nigeria ripples through African political stability and global economic markets. Because Nigeria produces more than 10 percent of the U.S. oil supply. Ultimately, the events unfolding in the Niger Delta affect us all.

It will take a vigilant world community to advocate for nonviolent political solutions. With this independent documentary, we take a stand for a more truthful conversation, with the hope that a more educated public will hold governments and big oil accountable to peaceful and just resolution.

Je to film o histórii nenásilného protestu domorodých obyvateľov, ktorí požadujú kontrolu nad svojimi vlastnými zdrojmi, a o vzniku organizácie "Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND)".
