Jeho seriál Cukrové deti zobrazuje portréty sociálne zanedbaných detí, pracujúcich na karibských plantážach. Uznávaná filmárka Lucy Walker oslovila Muniza, aby s ňou vytvoril nový projekt. Je otázkou, kto bude tentoraz dobrovoľným subjektom pre nový seriál, ktorý sa chce zamerať na nevyužitý odpad...
Pôsobivý dokument, ktorý zaznamenáva Munizovu cestu do Jardim Gramacho, najväčšej skládky odpadu na svete, nachádzajúcej sa na predmestí Rio de Janeira. Umelec spolupracuje s eklektickou skupinou tzv. catadores, čo sú samozvaní zberači odpadových materiálov, a tiež s fotografiami zachytávajúcimi postavy, ktoré recyklujú svoje životy a spoločenský odpad. Filmárka tak získala vynikajúci pohľad na celý proces. Ponúka vzrušujúci dôkaz o premenlivej sile umenia a hodnoty, ktoré majú šancu prejaviť sa v osobnom rozhodnutí.

(en) “Trashed” is a provocative investigation of one of the fastest growing industries in North America. The garbage business. The film examines a fundamental element of modern American culture…the disposal of what our society defines as “waste.” It is an issue influenced by every American, most of whom never consider the consequences. Nor, it seems, the implications to our biosphere. At times humorous, but deeply poignant, “Trashed” examines the American waste stream fast approaching a half billion tons annually.

What are the effects all this waste will have on already strained natural resources? Why is so much of it produced? While every American creates almost 5 pounds of it every day, who is affected most? And who wants America to make more?

The film analyzes the causes and effects of the seemingly innocuous act of “taking out the garbage” while showcasing the individuals, activists,corporate and advocacy groups working to affect change and reform the current model. “Trashed” is an informative and thought-provoking film everyone interested in the future of sustainability should see.

(cz) Balená voda je největší reklamní a marketingový podvod na světě, říká mediální analytička Barbara Lippertová v dokumentu Stephanie Soechtigové. Načerpat zdarma pitnou vodu, stočit ji do plastových lahví, rozvézt po světě a prodat zpátky lidem - ?modré zlato" prostě přináší snadné výdělky. Film přitom ukazuje, že voda v plastové lahvi je často tatáž, jaká teče ve všech amerických domácnostech z vodovodu. Režisérka dále rozkrývá, jak se firmy Nestlé, Pepsi Cola či Coca-Cola díky mezerám v zákonech vyhýbají daním z čerpání vody a recyklace, zveřejňování výsledků studií o zdravotní nezávadnosti i morální odpovědnosti za nepřímé důsledky jejich podnikání. Skupiny nezávislých expertů, aktivistů či novinářů přitom upozorňují na to, že balená voda škodí nejen našim peněženkám. Plastové lahve totiž obsahují látky, které jsou nebezpečné pro lidské zdraví, přispívají k výskytu rakoviny, neplodnosti a dalších onemocnění. Nadměrné čerpání vody a nedostatečná recyklace plastu navíc ohrožují životní prostředí: ryby a další vodní živočichové přicházejí o svá přirozená útočiště a světové oceány se začínají hemžit úlomky plastů ?nahrazujícími" plankton, potravu ryb.

(en) From flip-flops to footballs, water bottles to wastebaskets, plastic is everywhere in our world, and Ian Connacher's documentary confronts this daunting ubiquity head on. As he rises from his bed in the morning and the camera follows him into the shower, text pops up on the screen next to every plastic product he encounters. It's typical of his thoroughness and his wit, twin traits that lift this film out of the ordinary.

Sensibly alarmed and endlessly curious about plastic, Connacher trudges from time zone to time zone in search of answers. What does it do to our oceans? He observes maritime researchers tracking, counting and scooping a shocking amount of plastic from the most isolated regions of the sea. Where does our plastic waste go? It's off to India, just one of North America's offload destinations, where we see appalling overflow and some innovative solutions. What are some alternatives? We visit a manufacturer of "bioplastic," a more organic, more degradable option. So it goes, a scrupulous, adventurous trip through the history, economics, ecology and science of this infinitely problematic substance. This is no shrill rallying cry; Connacher keeps a level head through all the depressing environmental statistics and the endless pile-up of packed landfills. He's not out to inflame but to inform, and on that level Addicted to Plastic is most impressive.

(cz) Plasty kolem nás - Umělé hmoty jsou nedílnou součástí historie 20. století. A budou nás jistě ještě hodně dlouho doprovázet. Dá se z nich vyrobit mnoho užitečných věcí - od srdečních chlopní po předměty zcela prozaické denní potřeby. Problém je v tom, že plastové výrobky mají téměř neomezenou životnost, a když doslouží, nastává onen známý problém "kam s ním". Část plastů se spálí nebo využije pro další výrobu, některé skončí na skládkách, ale kvůli lidské nedbalosti a lhostejnosti jich mnoho zatěžuje životní prostředí. Na souši i na vodě. Alarmující je zjistění, že "plastové ostrovy" zamořují i světové oceány. Pole plovoucích plastových odpadů zaujímají v současnosti rozlohu o velikosti Evropy.
