(en) Does each gesture really make a difference? Can music and dance be weapons of peace? In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and, as she saw it, heading for self-destruction. After several years, travelling over five continents, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change. This is their story. From IRAN, where graffiti and rap became tools in fighting government repression, to BURMA, where monks acting in the tradition of Gandhi take on a dictatorship, moving on to BRAZIL, where musicians reach out to slum kids and transform guns into guitars, and ending in PALESTINIAN refugee camps in LEBANON, where photography, music, and film have given a voice to those rarely heard, CULTURES OF RESISTANCE explores how art and creativity can be ammunition in the battle for peace and justice.
Featuring: Medellín poets for peace, Capoeira masters from Brazil, Niger Delta militants, Iranian graffiti artists, womens movement leaders in Rwanda, Lebanons refugee filmmakers, U.S. political pranksters, indigenous Kayapó activists from the Xingu River, Israeli dissidents, hip-hop artists from Palestine, and many more...

(en) Ultra Zionists. Louis Theroux spends time with a small and very committed subculture of ultra-nationalist Jewish settlers. He discovers a group of people who consider it their religious and political obligation to populate some of the most sensitive and disputed areas of the West Bank, especially those with a spiritual significance dating back to the Bible. Throughout his journey, Louis gets close to the people most involved with driving the extreme end of the Jewish settler movement - finding them warm, friendly, humorous, and deeply troubling.

(en) Bringing Down A Dictator (56 min) documents the spectacular defeat of Slobodan Milosevic in October, 2000, not by force of arms, as many had predicted, but by an ingenious nonviolent strategy of honest elections and massive civil disobedience.
Milosevic was strengthened by patriotic fervor when NATO bombed Yugoslavia in early 1999, but a few months later, a student movement named Otpor! (“Resistance” in Serbian) launched a surprising offensive. Audaciously demanding the removal of Milosevic, they recruited where discontent was strongest, in the Serbian heartland.
Their weapons were rock concerts and ridicule, the internet and email, spray-painted slogans and a willingness to be arrested. Otpor students became the shock troops in an army of human rights, pro-democracy, anti-war, women’s groups, and opposition political parties. Their slogan: "He’s Finished!"
Trained in nonviolent action and partially financed by the US and Western Europe, they forged a unified political opposition, fought to stop vote fraud, and systematically undermined police and army loyalty. When Milosevic refused to accept defeat at the polls, the opposition called a general strike. As normal life ground to a halt, Serbs by the hundreds of thousands poured into the capital on October 5 to seize the Federal Parliament in a dramatic triumph for democracy. Narrated by Martin Sheen, this program aired on national PBS in 2002, and was honored with a George Foster Peabody award.

(en) In a rough style, by way of unique footage, the brutal consequences of modern wars are exposed. The film also depicts the ability of women and children to handle their everyday life after a dramatic war experience. Many of them live in tents or in ruins without walls or roofs. They are all in need of money, food, water and electricity. Others have lost family members, or are left with seriously injured children. Can war solve conflicts or create peace? The film follows three children through the war and the period after the ceasefire.

(cz) Norský film Tears of Gaza představuje strohým způsobem, prostřednictvím unikátních záběrů obyvatele pásma Gazy, kteří jsou vystaveni brutálním důsledkům vojenské okupace palestinského území.

(en) War Made Easy reaches into the Orwellian memory hole to expose a 50-year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United States into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq. Narrated by actor and activist Sean Penn, the film exhumes remarkable archival footage of official distortion and exaggeration from LBJ to George W. Bush, revealing in stunning detail how the American news media have uncritically disseminated the pro-war messages of successive presidential administrations.

War Made Easy gives special attention to parallels between the Vietnam war and the war in Iraq. Guided by media critic Norman Solomon’s meticulous research and tough-minded analysis, the film presents disturbing examples of propaganda and media complicity from the present alongside rare footage of political leaders and leading journalists from the past, including Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, dissident Senator Wayne Morse, and news correspondents Walter Cronkite and Morley Safer.

Norman Solomon’s work has been praised by the Los Angeles Times as “brutally persuasive” and essential “for those who would like greater context with their bitter morning coffee.” This film now offers a chance to see that context on the screen.

(cz) Válkou se to vyřeší - Během uplynulých padesáti let prudce vzrostl počet amerických vojenských operací ve světě. Byly opravdu nezbytné a v zájmu globální bezpečnosti? Během uplynulých padesáti let prudce vzrostl počet amerických vojenských operací ve světě - od raketových úderů a výsadkových akcí až po války a okupace. Důvody těchto zásahů se často lišily. Vždy zahrnovaly složité geopolitické zájmy Spojených států v různých částech světa a v různých etapách americké historie. Skutečné pohnutky a možné dopady vojenských operací oficiální představitelé státu zatajují. Místo toho veřejnosti opakovaně předkládají schůdnější verzi válečné reality. Většinou v podobě pozoruhodně souvislých konstrukcí, jejichž cílem není informovat, ale získat a udržet podporu občanů.

(en) In 1936, a right-wing military coup tried to overthrow the new, legally elected, democratic government of Spain. Hitler and Mussolini quickly joined the fight on the side of the fascist military. In response, and against the wishes of the U.S. government, about 80 American women joined over 2700 of their countrymen to volunteer for the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. This film is composed of interviews with and excerpts from the letters, journals, and published writings of some of these women, as well as of supporters and sympathizers including Martha Gellhorn, Eleanor Roosevelt, Virginia Cowles, Josephine Herbst, and Dorothy Parker.

(en) The larger scope of the story explores the gun trade to Africa that takes place under the covers -- Russian pilots fly guns into Africa, then fly fish back out to Europe. The hazards and consequences of this trade are explored, including the pan-African violence propagated by constant flow of weapons into the continent. If it is a "survival of the fittest" world, as Darwin concluded, then the capitalist interests that fund the gun runners are climbing the evolutionary ladder on the backs of the Africans in this stark Darwinian example. Much like the foreseeable extinction of the Lake Victoria perch, and death of Lake Victoria itself, the Africans are in grave jeopardy, even as they survive in the only ways they know how.

Ruské dopravní letouny denně odvážejí do Evropy a do Japonska 500 tun ryb (a nazpět nezřídka ilegálně dovážejí zbraně).

(en) "Where is God," an elderly man desperately wonders when surveying the debris in the Palestinian refugee camp Jenin.

Directed and co-produced by Palestinian actor Mohammad Bakri, Jenin Jenin includes testimony from Jenin residents after the Israeli army's Defensive Wall operation. The city and camp were the scenes of fierce fighting which ended with Jenin flattened and scores of Palestinians dead. Palestinians as well as numerous human rights groups accused Israel of committing war crimes in the attack. The United Nations appointed a commission of inquiry, but Israel refused to let its members visit the scene.

Banned in Israel, Jenin Jenin is dedicated to Iyad Samudi, the producer of the film, who returned home to Yamun after the shooting of the film was completed. On June 23, as Israeli forces besieged Yamun, Samudi was shot and killed as he was leaving a militarily-closed area with three friends.

(en) "Warsaw Rising: The Forgotten Soldiers of World War II" tells the story of the Polish resistance and its 63-day battle against the Nazis, a battle fought while the Western world celebrated the successful Allied landings at Normandy. Through interviews with survivors and use of rarely seen footage filmed by the Underground Army, CNN Presents offers an unflinching look at how a country known as the "first ally" was abandoned in its hour of need.

(cz) Před šedesáti lety obyvatelé Varšavy a chatrná armáda odboje povstali a začali bojovat proti nacistickým okupantům, ozbrojení jen skromnými zbraněmi a podomácku vyrobenými granáty. Málo známý a tragický příběh.

(en) The story of what happens to everyday Americans when corporations go to war. Acclaimed director Robert Greenwald (Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, Outfoxed) takes you inside the lives of soldiers, truck drivers, widows and children who have been changed forever as a result of profiteering in the reconstruction of Iraq. Iraq for Sale uncovers the connections between private corporations making a killing in Iraq (Blackwater, Halliburton/KBR, CACI and Titan) and the decision makers who allow them to do so.

(en) As a study release by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) early this year (see here) shows, the arms industry has been making more money than ever before in history. Citing www.controlarms.org:

Each year, at least a third of a million people are killed directly with conventional weapons and many more are injured, abused, forcibly displaced and bereaved as a result of armed violence. In armed conflicts, the lives of skilled people are lost, infrastructure such as schools, clinics and homes are lost; economic production and markets disappear and investment takes flight. Even outside wartime, government arms purchases can exceed legitimate security needs, diverting substantial amounts of money away from health and education. In ‘peace time’, the presence and availability of arms often intensifies violence engendered by political protest, disputes between neighbours, crime and violence in the home.

(read more here) http://www.controlarms.org/en/the-arms-trade

Thanks to hundreds of NGOs the UN member states are now working on an Arms Trade Treaty.

The documentary by Paul Moreira and David André “Waffenhandel - Ein Bombengeschäft”/”Des Armes a Abattre” broadcasted by arte.tv September this year shows the cruel reality of the arms trade.

(en) Is American foreign policy dominated by the idea of military supremacy? Has the military become too important in American life? Jarecki's shrewd and intelligent polemic would seem to give an affirmative answer to each of these questions.

(en) Set in Northern Uganda, a country ravaged by more than two decades of civil war, “War/Dance” tells the story of Dominic, Rose, and Nancy, three children whose families have been torn apart, their homes destroyed, and who currently reside in a displaced persons camp in Patongo. When they are invited to compete in an annual music and dance festival, their historic journey to their nation’s capital is also an opportunity to regain a part of their childhood and to taste victory for the first time in their lives.

(cz) Každý rok se více než dvacet tisíc škol v Ugandě účastní národní hudební soutěže, v níž děti předvádějí umění tradiční hudby i tance svých kmenů. V roce 2005 postoupila do celostátního finále v Kampale škola ze severní provincie Patongo, rozvrácené dvacetiletou občanskou válkou. Odhadem dva miliony lidí a dvě stě tisíc sirotků přežívá v táborech, střežených vojáky před bandami rebelů takzvané Lord's Resistance Army. Do svých domovů se vrátit nemohou. Mnohé z nich, jako Rose (13 let), Nancy (14 let) a Dominic (14 let), byly svědky popravy svých rodičů, či dokonce uneseny rebely a přinuceny k zabíjení. Dramaticky vystavěný příběh ale vypovídá o univerzální síle hudby, s jejíž pomocí mohou děti kmene Acholi unikat válečným bolestem a znovu nalézat svou důstojnost. Film zaujme svým vizuálně podmanivým výrazem, který skvěle podtrhuje hudební doprovod.

(en) Is it possible for a photograph to change the world? Photographs taken by soldiers in Abu Ghraib prison changed the war in Iraq and changed Americas image of itself. Yet, a central mystery remains. Did the notorious Abu Ghraib photographs constitute evidence of systematic abuse by the American military, or were they documenting the aberrant behavior of a few bad apples? We set out to examine the context of these photographs. Why were they taken? What was happening outside the frame? We talked directly to the soldiers who took the photographs and who were in the photographs. Who are these people? What were they thinking? Over two years of investigation, we amassed a million and a half words of interview transcript, thousands of pages of unredacted reports, and hundreds of photographs. The story of Abu Ghraib is still shrouded in moral ambiguity, but it is clear what happened there. The Abu Ghraib photographs serve as both an expose and a coverup. An expose, because the photographs offer us a glimpse of the horror of Abu Ghraib; and a coverup because they convinced journalists and readers they had seen everything, that there was no need to look further. In recent news reports, we have learned about the destruction of the Abu Zubaydah interrogation tapes. A coverup. It has been front page news. But the coverup at Abu Ghraib involved thousands of prisoners and hundreds of soldiers. We are still learning about the extent of it. Many journalists have asked about the smoking gun of Abu Ghraib. It is the wrong question. As Philip Gourevitch has commented, Abu Ghraib is the smoking gun. The underlying question that we still have not resolved, four years after the scandal: how could American values become so compromised that Abu Ghraiband the subsequent coverupcould happen?

(sk) Ospravedlnenia z hláv odsúdených amerických vojakov vysvetľujú pozadie vzniku fotiek mučených irackých väzňov vo väznici Abú Ghrajb. Vo vysokom rozlíšení sa striedajú úkony vykonávané na príkaz amerických väzniteľov: nútená onania, pyramída naháčov, prikladanie elektrinou nabitých drôtov na telo, nohavičky na hlavách, symbolické ukrižovanie, zastrašovanie útočným psom a pod. Hlavné príčiny podľa zainteresovaných: rozkazy veliacich dôstojníkov, sadista v tíme, mladosť-pochabosť, zamilovanosť. Z emočne studenej obhajoby vyplýva: my nič, len poslušné bábky, kolieska v stroji zvrhlého systému. Trpká pachuť z potrestania nastrčených pešiakov a rýchleho upratania tajných rozkazov ostáva.

The War Game (1965)

The War Game (1965)
Documentary on possible nuclear war

INFO:
Peter Watkins, UK, english, 1965, 48 min.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059894/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_Game
http://www.csfd.cz/film/228832-war-game-the/?text=46743

(en) The War Game is a fictional, worst-case-scenario docu-drama about nuclear war and its aftermath in and around a typical English city. Although it won an Oscar for Best Documentary, it is fiction. It was intended as an hour-long program to air on BBC 1, but it was deemed too intense and violent to broadcast. It went to theatrical distribution as a feature film instead. Low-budget and shot on location, it strives for and achieves convincing and unflinching realism.
