(en) Bringing Down A Dictator (56 min) documents the spectacular defeat of Slobodan Milosevic in October, 2000, not by force of arms, as many had predicted, but by an ingenious nonviolent strategy of honest elections and massive civil disobedience.
Milosevic was strengthened by patriotic fervor when NATO bombed Yugoslavia in early 1999, but a few months later, a student movement named Otpor! (“Resistance” in Serbian) launched a surprising offensive. Audaciously demanding the removal of Milosevic, they recruited where discontent was strongest, in the Serbian heartland.
Their weapons were rock concerts and ridicule, the internet and email, spray-painted slogans and a willingness to be arrested. Otpor students became the shock troops in an army of human rights, pro-democracy, anti-war, women’s groups, and opposition political parties. Their slogan: "He’s Finished!"
Trained in nonviolent action and partially financed by the US and Western Europe, they forged a unified political opposition, fought to stop vote fraud, and systematically undermined police and army loyalty. When Milosevic refused to accept defeat at the polls, the opposition called a general strike. As normal life ground to a halt, Serbs by the hundreds of thousands poured into the capital on October 5 to seize the Federal Parliament in a dramatic triumph for democracy. Narrated by Martin Sheen, this program aired on national PBS in 2002, and was honored with a George Foster Peabody award.

(en) Opening with a montage of four hundred years of race conflict in America, this powerful documentary provides the historical context for the establishment of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense in the mid-1960s.

Organized by Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton, the Party soon embodied every major element of the civil rights movement which preceded it and the Black, Brown and Red power movements which it helped pioneer.

The Party struck fear in the hearts of the white capitalist power structure, which feared it as a terrorist group. During the Nixon years, J. Edgar Hoover's FBI, with the cooperation of the CIA, used all means at their disposal to infiltrate and derail the Black Power movement. Methods of state repression included assassination, frame-ups, dirty tricks and black propaganda.

Witnesses include not only Party veterans and other Black Power pioneers and political prisoners such as Mumia Abu-Jamal, Dr. Mutulu Skakur and Dhoruba Bin Wahad, but also "establishment" figures like former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, CIA officer Philip Edward Agee, and retired FBI agents.

Yet, the documentary is not a paean to the Panthers, for it criticizes the megalomania, corruption, and narcissism of some Party leaders, while it praises their courage and idealism.

Whether or not one is sympathetic to the Black Panthers, the film is an important historic look at the political and racial turmoils of the 1960s and an up-close look at the leading players.

A film about the revolutionaries after the revolution, PUBLIC ENEMY focuses on the personal lives, past and present, of four Panther Party members - prisoner-turned-playwright Jamal Joseph; musician and record producer, Nile Rodgers (Chic, Sister Sledge); law professor and lecturer Kathleen Cleaver; and the last surviving founding member, Bobby Seale.

Through candid conversations, the promise and limitations of attempting revolutionary change are expressed: What were the Party's long-term effects on African Americans and their status in society? How did the Black Panther Party impact popular culture? How did these leaders' involvement personally affect them - their hopes, their dreams? And after tumultuous years of being viewed by the FBI as "the greatest internal threat to the nation," how does America perceive them today?

Interlacing archival protest footage with recent interviews, the film examines black America today, 25 years after the demise of its most radical advocates. Originally satellitecast nationally on Free Speech TV March 14, the video follows the Zapatista caravan as it journeyed through 12 Mexican states visiting indigenous communities, eventually arriving in Mexico City to be greeted by over 300,000 people.

(en) At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, the nun Maria is forced to flee her convent. She takes refuge in a brothel, until it is liberated by a woman's anarchist group. Maria joins the group and eventually goes to the front. The women's group faces the problems of fighting not only the nationalists, but also factions on the left seeking to impose a more traditional military structure.

Synopsis: This big-budget Spanish drama pays tribute to the courageous women who sacrificed their lives during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Maria's peaceful life as a nun is shattered when revolutionary anarchists force her and her sisters to flee their convent sanctuary. Maria ends up hiding in a brothel where she meets the good-hearted whore Charo. Their peace is in turn destroyed by the sudden arrival of Pilar, a passionate, idealistic member of the Free Women organization. Her fiery speeches and strong arm tactics compel the hookers and Maria to join their fight. A handsome ex-priest also joins them as they fight with the anarchists in Zaragoza. Following a small victory, the formerly trench-bound, battle-weary women celebrate, but then Maria finds herself faced with the destruction and death that goes with war. Later the former priest informs the women that they will not be allowed to fight upon the front lines and the women are left with broken ideals and angry hearts that lead them into one last, violent battle.

(cz) Film začíná hymnou CNT A Las Barricadas a začne se to pořádně rozjíždět. Soukromé vlastnictví zrušeno, moc přebírá proletariát. Nenávist lidu se vybíjí na buržoazii a představitelích církve. Ty, jež sympatizují s fašismem začnou popravovat. Jedna z hlavních hrdinek tohoto filmu je jeptiška a protože agrese ze strany milice je z jejího pohledu nečitelná, uprchne. Ukryje se mezi prostitutkami, kde přijdou agitovat Mujeres Libres. Po krátkém přesvědčení je donucena s nimi odejít. Avšak postupně zahoří sympatiemi k revoluci. Pak sledujeme odchod hrdinek na frontu a sledujeme všechen ten hnus, který tam probíhal. Revoluce není žádná romantika. Jak to dopadne, to už musíte zjistit sami.

At 67, Peter Watkins remains a restless radical, creating films that spectacularly defy narrative conventions, entrenched ideologies and, it must be said, the patience of his viewers.
With a running time of 5 hours 45 minutes, Mr. Watkins's most recent film, ''La Commune (Paris, 1871),'' is far from his longest work, but in many ways it is his most ambitious. (The longest, ''The Journey,'' a 1987 survey of the nuclear arms race, was 12 hours.)

Explores the seminal events surrounding the rise and fall of the 1871 Paris Commune. After the disastrous defeat suffered by the French in the Franco-Prussian War, a revolutionary fervour arose in Paris that shortly turned into civil war. As the monarchy of Napoleon III collapsed and a Government of National Defence emerged, a situation arose in which the commoners seized the reins of power and established a government that challenged the authority of the newly elected National Assembly. The establishment of the Paris Commune, a power separate from the one legally enforced by the state, forced an inevitable confrontation between established and insurgent authorities.
