It's that time of year again, are you ready to bake some biscotti? With just one basic recipe you can make so many variations? Spend a marathon day of baking and you can acquire hundreds! Give them out as gifts to your friends, family and co-workers and they will love you for it!
This is my new favorite combination, fig and pistachio with a hint of orange and anise. I already made a huge batch, quadrupled the recipe and gave some out to friends and some of my fig loving family members. I'm ready to make more and so will you once you try these!
You'll love the way your kitchen smells when these are baking. The aroma lingered for days!
Of course you'll have to taste test them to make sure they came out alright, so put on a pot of espresso after the first batch cools off!
Here's the recipe:
Ingredients:
1 t. of anise seeds
1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temp
3/4 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1 t. vanilla extract
1 t. of anise extract
1 t. grated orange zest
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 t. baking powder
1/4 t. salt
1/2 cup shelled pistachios
4 oz. dried figs, cut into 1/4 inch dice with stems removed. Note* It's alot easier to pulse your figs in a food processor, just make sure to leave them chunky like the size of a pea, and make sure you snip off the tips of your figs first, they tend to be really hard and inedible
**Heat oven to 350 degrees.
**With your mixer, beat butter and sugar on medium-high until smooth, about 2 minutes.
**Add eggs, extracts, and zest, and beat until creamy and light.
**Combine dry ingredients together, then add to the butter mixture, add the figs and the nuts last.
**Mix everything on low speed until incorporated then remove dough and divide in half.
**Form two 9×2 inch logs, place on parchment lined baking sheet apart from each other, and bake until lightly browned (25 to 30 minutes).
**Remove from oven, and let them cool down, you can't cut them when they're hot they'll crumble. Using a serrated knife, take your time and slowly cut logs into 1/2″ thick slices.
**Arrange biscotti on their sides on the baking sheet. Return to oven, and bake until golden, about 10-15 minutes. Turn biscotti over on the other side and bake for another 10-15 minutes more, or until desired crispiness. Cool on racks.

I decided to try and brine our turkey this year, dry brining appealed to me. I saw Martha do it on her show. 2/3 cup of kosher salt with a few crumbled bay leaves. Rub your turkey down from top to bottom and inside, place in an airtight bag 2 days prior to cooking. Rinse well before cooking.
The result was a super moist tender turkey, we all loved it. Dry brining is my new favorite thing!!
Outside we grilled an additional bone in turkey breast that was rubbed all over with a paste of olive oil, garlic, and fresh herbs. Great for that sandwich I'm about to make!
Ooops, I forgot my cranberries and rolls for the photo! I also made stuffing balls with different ingredient variations, great way to serve stuffing, nice portions, and they get crispy all over.

Artistic director Nicolas Kent describes the Tricycle Theatre's new trilogy, Not Black and White, as a “stock-take” of multicultural Britain.
He gave three writers — Roy Williams (right), Kwame Kwei-Armah (left) and Bola Agbaje (middle), all London-based — free rein to choose their themes; respectively, the prison service, politics and immigration.
“Here we are in a culturally diverse capital and yet we seem to have very few black people involved in the governance of it; there's a power deficit for black and Asian people,” Kent says. “This seemed a good time to do an audit of cosmopolitan London and British society and I thought it would be good to take three leading black playwrights to open up the debate. Kwame and Roy [who are both in their early forties] are probably the two most senior black writers today and Bola [28] is a very interesting new voice. “I think people like big ideas and these are three writers at the top of their game. What they don't do is reference white society, or place black people in relation to it, and certainly not in an oppositional way, as so many black writers feel they have to. They are much more about black people's relationships with each other. We're looking at things in a more mature way — at the shifts in society that move us away from simple black/white debates.”
Under Kent, for the past 25 years, the small but influential Tricycle in Kilburn has not only altered the landscape of British theatre but has also helped change how the Establishment operates. The theatre has pioneered verbatim work with its tribunal plays about enquiries into events such as Bloody Sunday, arms sales to Iraq and the Srebrenica massacre. K tomuto nezvyklému kroku mě vede snaha nepřispět filmem pouze k tomu, že jeho diváci a divačky budou ještě izolovanější, odcizenější a anonymnější u svých počítačů, ale naopak k tomu, aby se lidé sešli, diskutovali o tématech, o kterých se ve filmu mluví a třeba i poznali nějaké nové lidi s podobným náhledem na svět...

Harry Roselmack will present the TV program “derrière les murs de la cité” (behind the walls of the city). The most popular French journalist, according to a recent small survey, will plunge himself in the troubled French suburbs for a full month.
The concept is English: a journalist will take part and submerge himself in the daily live of a community. For the BBC it’s Louis Theroux, who is best known for his Gonzo style journalism, which is a style of reporting where reporters involve themselves in the action to such a degree that they become central figures of their stories.
Roselmack’s program will cover the daily live in the French suburbs. He will first visit the Paris suburb Villiers-le-Bel, the place where the riots started in November 2007. Through the testimonies of the residents, he will will attempt to decipher the functioning of a notoriously difficult city.
Rémi Pernelet, editor-in-Chief of TV 1, is thrilled: "This show will find its public because it provides a different look at life in the suburbs." It will be a success."
The program will be aired by the commercial station TV1, starting on 24 November. I hope Roselmack will make a program that will change the perspective about people of the 'banlieues'. More globaly, this nuclear industry is trying to make a comeback as the solution of the world´s increasing demand for energy and the threat of the dramatic climate change. In our world of today we have around 430 operating reactors, while 52 are under construction. 135 are already planned (and will most probably be ready within 8 years) and 295 are proposed (which means they will be most probably ready within 15 years). Nuclear powerplants don´t function without uranium and for that we need to dig it out of the earth. In that sense it would be quiet normal that if finnish people are using electricity that comes from nuclear energy, that they have to accept also uranium mines in their own backyard. It would be in a way a lot more ethical than wasting the land in other countries. Anyway, the whole nuclear industry is not fair or ethical in any sense. Decisions are made by a little amount of people and the rest has to follow or… inform themselves and raise their voice.
So, on the 26th of august a protestcamp was set up in Ranua, southern Lapland. with the aim of monitoring Areva´s activities and support the resistance against the uranium mining in Ranua, but as I already explained, also to protest against nuclear industry as a whole. At this moment, the camp exists almost for two months. Bit by bit the camp got more and more attention. Local people are supporting the camp, bringing food and clothes, inviting us for sauna or a shower… Together with the local people of Ranua, we organised a documentary evening, an information moment on the market square and we try to inform as much people as possible. One of the big problems is that lots of people simply don’t know about the consequences of uranium mining or nuclear energy as a whole. So it’s a big challenge to inform the people. And important, to convince the people of the council who are going to vote on the 16th of november about willing a uranium mine or not. A no-vote from the council will be, at least, a little step in the good direction…

Local families here are completely dependent on its growth and sale, and do their best to nip in the bud any potential danger to their crops. That includes using foreign anti-parasite chemicals, which they spray several times more often than is recommended. Labels warning against frequent usage are only in Danish. Such pesticides are banned in the European Union. Even their producer Cheminova does not use them in Denmark - only in India. The result of using cheap pesticides in terms of number of deaths is comparable with World War I. However, the Danish chemical maker is none too concerned by this. After seeing a documentary on the practice the managers of a retail chain which buys cotton in India are shocked, but low prices are their chief selling point. Their customers, meanwhile, might be able to respond to such practices, but the majority have no idea what is going on. The chain declares publicly that it maintains high ethical, environmental and moral standards.

This condiment with a kick is great to have readily available in your frig at all times. Perfect when friends or family stop by and you need a quick appetizer or just something little to munch on. Other ways to use this spicy condiment is to toss it in with some pasta, slather it on your favorite sandwich, use it as a side, or a topping on pizza.
How can you go wrong with eggplant, fennel, roasted red peppers, onions, artichoke hearts, mushrooms and olives? The slight heat in the background is from a touch of cayenne and smoked paprika. The combination is so good together! The worse part of this recipe is that all your vegetables need to be finely diced, a little time consuming, but worth it. I would recommend making a large amount, why you might ask? Because this is another addicting little treat!
This recipe comes from the book Earth to Table, I'm giving you the recipe from the book but I quadrupled mine and added more olive oil to the finished product, and a touch more heat.
Here's the Ingredients:
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 cups eggplant, finely diced (1 medium-large)
1 ½ cups fennel root, finely diced (1 small or ½ large bulb)
¾ cup roasted red peppers, finely diced ( I roasted my own)
¾ cup white onion, finely diced (1 large)
½ cup green olives, drained, pitted and finely diced
½ cup artichoke hearts, finely diced (I used frozen, defrosted, and added more)
2)½ cup fresh cremini mushrooms, finely diced
3 large cloves garlic, minced
¼ tsp cayenne pepper
¼ tsp smoked paprika
2 tbsp sherry vinegar
Salt & freshly ground black pepper to taste
½ cup fresh flat leaf/Italian parsley, chopped
In a large skillet saute in the olive oil all veggies until slightly softened, then add your cayenne and smoked paprika. Cool down all your veggies on a large baking sheet. When cooled, place in a bowl and add the vinegar, salt and pepper to taste, adjust your heat and toss in your parsley. I drizzled in more olive oil before I place it all in an airtight container and refrigerated it. This will last a good week.
Also wonderful with a nice chunk of crusty bread, and don't forget to pour a glass of cold wine along side it!

Данное имя мало известно широкой общественности, но для многих российских антифашистов и левых активистов это поистине огромная утрата. Иван придерживался левых взглядов и периодически участвовал в различных акциях протеста по социальной тематике, но в первую очередь он известен как один из неформальных лидеров молодежного антифашистского движения. Для большинства друзей Ивана очевидно, что убийство совершили российские нацисты.
Его адрес и имя, как и адреса и имена многих других известных антифашистов, таких как Станислав Маркелов и Николай Гиренко, неоднократно вывешивались на пронацисткие сайты с призывами к его уничтожению. И это уже было четвертое по счету нападение на Ивана. Первый раз на него напали нацисты в 2005 году и порезали бритвой голову. Данный инцидент был зафиксирован на видеокамеру и затем использовался в программе «Обыкновенный Антифашизм» на НТВ. Второй раз нападавшие праворадикалы ждали его в подъезде. Ивану чудом удалось выжить. Он получил множественные ранение отверткой в область шеи, а также многочисленные удары бейсбольной битой. И уже в январе этого года во время уличной драки ему был нанесен удар ножом в живот, после которого Иван снова еле выжил. И вот только с четвертого раза нацисты судя по всему добились своего…
(en) Yesterday evening at around 9:00 p.m., 26-year-old Ivan Khutorskoi was shot and killed in the stairwell of his apartment building (Khabarovskaya, 2) in Moscow. While the greater public might not know his name, this is a truly enormous loss for many Russian antifascists and leftist activists. Ivan held leftist views and periodically participated in various social protest actions. First and foremost, however, he was known as one of the informal leaders of the Moscow antifascist movement. It is obvious to most of Ivan’s friends that Russian Nazis committed the murder.
Like the addresses and names of many other well-known antifascists (for example, Stanislav Markelov and Nikolai Girenko), Ivan’s address and name were frequently posted on pro-Nazi sites alongside calls for his liquidation. And in fact the murder was the fourth in a series of attacks on Ivan. The first attack took place in 2005, when Nazis attacked him and wounded him in the head with a razor blade. This incident was captured on video and then later used in the program “Ordinary Antifascism,” on NTV. The second time, the radical right-wingers were waiting for him in the stairwell of his building. Although Ivan received multiple wounds in the neck area from a screwdriver and numerous blows from a baseball bat, he miraculously survived. In January of this year, Ivan was stabbed in the stomach with a knife during a street fight, and once again Ivan barely survived the attack. But now, it would seem, the Nazis have succeeded in achieving their goal the fourth time round.

Toto meno nebolo všeobecne známe, avšak bol jedným z pilierov ruského antifašizmu a ľavicového aktivizmu. Predovšetkým bol známy ako jeden z neformálnych vedúcich osobností mladého antifašistického hnutia a ako jeden zo zakladateľov R.A.S.H. (Red and anarchist skinheads) v Rusku - komunity antifašistických skinheadov, ktorá zastáva ľavicové názory. Väčšine jeho priateľov je jasné, že za jeho vraždou stoja neonacisti.
Ivanove údaje, fotky a adresa, rovnako ako informácie o iných antifašistoch sa niekoľkokrát objavili na neonacistických weboch, vyzývajúc na ich likvidáciu. Toto bol už štvrtý pokus o Ivanovu vraždu, nanešťastie úspešný. Po prvýkrát naňho neonacisti zaútočili v roku 2005. Tento incident bol natočený kamerou a objavil sa v dokumentárnom programe „Ordinary antifascism“. Neskôr si Ivana útočníci počkali v bráne jeho domu, bodli ho do krku skrutkovačom a niekoľkokrát udreli do hlavy bejzbalovou palicou - Ivan však akoby zázrakom prežil. Tretí útok sa odohral v januári 2009, Ivana počas pouličnej bitky bodli do žalúdka - toto zranenie sa mu stalo takmer osudným, no opäť prežil. Keď všetko ostatné zlyhalo, neonacisti sa uchýlili k strelným zbraniam.
Ivan bol zodpovedný človek s obrovským srdcom, ktorý bol vždy pripravený pomôcť svojim priateľom. Bol príkladom nezlomnej vôle a odvahy, ktorý ostal verný svojim ideálom až do úplného konca. Zaradenie Ivana do jednej zo skupín by mohlo zavádzať - bol rešpektovaný a uznávaný každým v scéne, všetci ho brali za svojho. Ivan považoval sám seba za R.A.S.H. Skinheada, čo však nebránilo apolitickým a patriotickým Moscow Trojan Skins aby ho brali za jedného z nich. Anarchisti zase samozrejme radili Ivana medzi seba - je pravda, že Ivan zastával antiautoritárske a sociálne postoje a bol vždy pripravený poskytnúť ochranu anarchistickým akciám. Nežil však pre aktivizmus, žil pre ulice a pre punk-rock.

In response to the controversy Universal Pictures said, the poster had been changed to ‘simplify’ it for the UK and international market outside America. The studio added that it regretted causing offence and has abandoned plans to use the revised poster in other countries.
I think it's the segregated mind of a US marketer. How does Universal know that black actors on a poster will frighten a "European" audience. I don't think they have stats to support it, so it must be just a feeling. To me black and white actors in a film, is a typical American film. Years a ago I read a book with black and white people on the cover. I actually thought I was reading an American book, but when I finish it, it turned out to be a book from a Scottish publisher who wanted to make his book look like an American book.
