Bartolomeo Colleoni

Meet Bartolomeo Colleoni (1400-1475), military commander of the Republic and a great war leader. The statue was made by Andrea Verrocchio (1435-1488), prominent Florentine sculptor. The statue is displayed on a very high piedestal.
Here is the story that I've heard about this statue : Colleoni, very rich and at the end of his life, wanted to bequeath his fortune to Venice, provided a statue of him was erected "in front of San Marco". The Doge had to deny such a conceited request. But he finally got the huge leg by placing the statue not in front of "Basilica" San Marco, but in front of of the "scuola" di San Marco - which yet remains a wonderful place - on campo San Giovanni e Paolo in the Castello Sestiere.
