(en) Beautiful Losers celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation. In the early 1990s a loose-knit group of like-minded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group and the subcultures they sprang from have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

(en) In the late 1990s, a hybrid form of graffiti began appearing in cities around the world. Enlisting stickers, stencils, posters, and sculpture and spread by the burgeoning Internet, it would be labeled “street art” and establish itself as the most significant counterculture movement of a generation. Los Angeles–based filmmaker Terry Guetta set out to record this secretive world in all its thrilling detail. For more than eight years, he traveled with the pack, roaming the streets of America and Europe, the stealthy witness of the world’s most infamous vandals. But after meeting the British stencil artist known only as “Banksy,” things took a bizarre turn.

Sundance has shown films by unknown artists but never an anonymous one. Banksy turns the tables on the only man who has ever filmed him, creating a remarkable documentary that is part personal journey and part an exposé of the art world with its mind-altering mix of hot air and hype. In the end, Exit Through the Gift Shop is an amazing ride, a cautionary modern fairy tale . . . with bolt cutters.

(sk) Koncom deväťdesiatych rokov sa v mestách po celom svete začala objavovať nová hybridná forma graffiti. Zahŕňajúca nálepky, šablóny, plagáty a sochárstvo, a šíriaca sa prekvitajúcim internetom, dostala pomenovanie "street art" a etablovala sa ako najvýznamnejšie hnutie kontrakultúry celej generácie. Filmár Terry Guetta, pochádzajúci z Los Angeles, sa vybral natočiť tento tajuplný svet až do úchvatných detailov. Viac než osem rokov cestoval spolu s ostatnými, tulajúc sa ulicami Ameriky a Európy, ako nenápadný svedok celosvetovo najvykričanejších vandalov. Ale potom čo sa spoznal s britským šablónovým umelcom známym pod prezývkou "Banksy", chod vecí nabral zrazu bizarný smer.

Festival Sundance už premietal filmy neznámych umelcov, avšak ešte nikdy žiaden od anonymného. Banksy obracia kameru na jediného muža, ktorý ho kedy filmoval, vytvárajúc tak pozoruhodný dokumentárny snímok, ktorý je sčasti osobnou púťou a sčasti odkrytím sveta umelcov s jeho ohromujúcim mixom horúcej pary a vychvaľovania. Nakoniec je film Exit Through the Gift Shop úžasnou jazdou, výstražnou modernou rozprávkou . . . s veľkými kliešťami.

(en) This documentary was created sometime around 1987 and aired on channel 4. It is a follow up of sorts to the 1984 BBC documentary 'Beat This' which served as an outsiders view of Hip Hop as a new New York sub-cultural phenomenon. Here Director Dick Fontaine returns to focus on the UK adoption of this Hip Hop culture and some of the conflicts created therein. To achieve this, the production chose to focus on Graffiti Art, no doubt because this element had the biggest conflict and issues to explore with its high presence, intrusion and illegality. In those days Break dancing took centre stage in the UK but wouldn't have provided nearly as interesting debates to explore. After providing such a strong argumentative presence in 'Beat This', Brim Fuentes (TAT) is brought over to the UK as a sort of cultural ambassador of New York graffiti in a string of workshops and informal seminars. He is also put squarely in front of international main stream media's scrutiny. To which they responded in a manner of ways that at best was condescending and at worst was a down right personal attack for being a catalyst to the vandalising of Britain's culture and heritage. From here the documentary alludes to the social implications of ethnicity and poverty, and their relationship with the Hip Hop subculture. This is where Goldie (of later Drum n Bass fame) as one of the UK premier graffiti artists makes a strong presence in his most notable early television appearance. It's his relationship and 'parallels' with Brim that really play out the rest of the documentary as the two exchange visits to each others home environments in Wolverhampton and the Bronx respectively. The film incidentally captures some of the earliest footage of significant UK protagonists such as Goldie and a pre Massive Attack 3D (not his finest hour here), as well as a noticeably limited Mode 2 and the Chrome Angels appearance at the Birmingham wall commission. However it is debatable that the producers pushed their own inclinations towards ethnicity and Graffiti here, with their focus on Goldie and Brim. It makes for interesting viewing but considering the well documented fact that the culture transcended ethnic barriers in New York and beyond, it can be held up as a particular flaw. You decide.

Filmed in New York, London, Paris, Sao Paulo and Tokyo, it introduces the graffiti-inspired street art pioneers Futura 2000, Ramm:ell:zee, Os Gemeos, Space Invader, Blek le Rat, Miss Van Eine, some whose art is now celebrated among the trendy and wealthy of New York and London.

The movement started in the late '70s when hip hop and the spray can emerged from the lanes and backstreets and spread like a virus across the urban landscapes of the rest of the world. Art patron Agnes B and art curator Jerome Sans comment on the early days of Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat, when graffiti changed the streets of New York and then of other cities around the planet.

It reveals how these artists have developed a unique system of economic survival, from selling limited-edition prints to clothing designs for streetwear labels and creating record labels and logos for youth brands.

Dokument predstavuje, ako si títo umelci vytvorili unikátny systém ekonomického prežitia z predaja limitovaných návrhov oblečenia rôzne značky a z vytvárania hudobných vydavateľstiev a lôg značiek pre mladých.

With just one spot of red paint between the eyes the Parisian artist ZEVS, executes the advertising industry's images of perfect humans. 'People don't think about the force of advertising,' says Zevs and continues, 'But with just one psst I remove the force. No one wants to be identified with a dead person so advertising looses its effect'. ZEVS calls his action 'Visual Attack', and he has executed billboards worth millions around Paris. At the same time, ZEVS is a respected artist who exhibits all around the world. "Inside Outside" follows ZEVS and other so-called street artists from New York, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Sao Paulo. They all make a living off their art, but they also have an urge to exhibit their work illegally in the streets.

(sk) Len jednou bodkou červenej farby medzi očami popravuje parížsky umelec ZEVS portréty dokonalých ľudí reklamného priemyslu. "Ľudia nerozmýšľajú nad silou reklamy," hovorí ZEVS a pokračuje, "ale len s jedným psssst túto silu odstránim. Nikto sa nechce identifikovať s mŕtvou osobou, a tak tá reklama stráca svoj efekt." ZEVS nazýva svoju akciu "Vizuálny útok", a takto popravil po celom Paríži billboardy v hodnote miliónov dolárov. Zároveň je ZEVS rešpektovaným umelcom, ktorý vystavuje svoje umenie po celom svete. "Inside Outside" nasleduje ZEVSa a iných takzvaných "street artists - pouličných umelcov" z New Yorku, Štokholmu, Kodane a Sao Paula. Všetci sa dokážu uživiť svojím umením, ale tiež ich to ťahá vystavovať svoje umenie nelegálne v uliciach.

These artists bang away at the community conscience by sticking this artwork right in the public eye. The spirit of rebellion is being channelled into street art and these visual conversations are spreading across the walls of Melbourne. RASH offers a rare insight into graffiti artists´ world view.

Jon Reiss natáčel svůj celovečerním dokument Bomb It (2007), zabývající se explozí subkultury graffiti, na pěti světadílech. Reissův první film, Kleopatřin druhý manžel (Cleopatra's Second Husband / 1998), byl temné psychologické drama. Promítal se na filmových festivalech v Los Angeles, Seattlu, Montrealu, Hamptons, Houstonu, Sao Paulu a Bangkoku a získal cenu pro nejlepší celovečerní debut na festivalu Cinequest. Jeho celovečerní dokument Lepší život díky obvodům (Better Living Through Circuitry / 1999) přinesl překvapivý, humorný a zábavný pohled na explodující rave subkulturu.

(en) The term Street Art has evolved to define the more visual and engaging aspects of urban art, as opposed to simply text-based graffiti and tagging. This film follows such notorious cult figures as: Blek Le Rat, Nano 4814, Nuria, Sweet Toof, NoNose, and Eine, as they work upon the pavements of Paris Londonand Madrid During the film we pursue these characters as they create new pieces and discuss the varying approaches to Street Art in these three diverse cities.

We also meet some of the artists taking part in the first ever Street Art exhibition at Tate Modern, and explore the rapidly expanding commercial market that's turning street artists into big earners at the auction houses. What does this newfound profitable aspect mean for this formerly underground and anti-establishment scene?
